Lion King is based on Hamlet. Lion King 2 is based on Romeo and Juliet. Personally, I find the latter story to be overdone, but to each their own.

That's fair, I think it makes a few changes that do make it worthwhile (especially for kids and also those more familiar with the original story) I really like the idea of the star crossed lovers actively going back and trying to bring peace to the warring families as opposed to just offing themselves. I get that there's a certain power in discovering what really matters after it's too late, but I think there's power in fighting to make things better for everyone while also being true to yourself and what you want. I like how Kiara pretty immediately made the choice to go back despite knowing the state she left her pride (specifically her father) in and how she knows going back with Kovu will make her father even angrier but she knows it's the only way.
