Depends on how long the wait is. If the waiter sets my food down first I won't instantly dig in while he's still setting everyone else's plates down. But once he's done that and indicated that an error occurred and some is waiting awhile then everyone else should start eating.

This is why I rarely order take out or go through a drive through and if I do I'm eating in my car. I want my food as hot and fresh as possible. At a restaurant with a large group, most will bring it all the food at once, if they don't I really hate sitting there waiting for the last dish or two to start eating

It was never a thing when I grew up, even now that I'm grown up, my mom insists that no one waits for her. My grandmother was the same. And I am starting to behave the same way (shockingly). Whenever someone waits for me, I brush it off and be like " eat before it gets cold, no need to wait". But I do wait if someone else is cooking, because I learned most people consider this to be polite.

Good unpopular opinion because I think it is nice to follow social customs to not eat until everyone has their food. You may not realize this but it is (was) also rude to eat in front of anyone else. This means, for example, not eating on trains, planes, airport terminals, sidewalks when there are other people around and they don't have food. This has been forgotten in much of the US but is still followed in other parts of the world where you are the "Ugly American" for eating in front of others . . .
