+147 Turning right on red is optional unless marked, I'm not going to risk my safety for the honking car behind that can't see the road, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

My favorite is when theres a no turn on red sign and they still honk.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Break the law for me damnit

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That's not what they're honking about, they're honking because they're an impatient jerk and/or illiterate.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There are 3 (!!!) "no turn on red" signs at an intersection near my daughter's daycare and I still get honked at. It's not even a long light!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There's an intersection in my city that has 2 very visible "no turn on red" signs and everyone ignores it. And I mean everyone. I can't think of a time when someone actually stayed there the entire red light and didn't turn…I'm pretty sure I'm the only person who actually obeys the sign, and when I do, I get honked and yelled at by people behind me. Idk why the city cops don't just camp out there. It'd be easy pickings and they could make so much money from all the "failure to obey a traffic sign" citations.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Makes me wanna step out of the vehicle and point at the sign Obviously I won't do it but I just know I have to clarify in advance because there's a bunch of pro drivers here

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I don't step out of my vehicle but I do roll down my window and point. They usually figure it out at that point

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Once, I was trying to turn left out of a parking lot and cars kept coming so I couldn't turn out and the guy behind me honked and I didn't go so he laid on his horn and didn't take his hand off. And when that didn't work he rolled down his window and started yelling at me! I was like wtf do you want me to do!!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

On my walk to work I always wait a few seconds after the no turn light comes on before crossing because someone always goes

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I'll admit I've been guilty of this. Then I see my wrong. I try to apologize. But telepathy hasn't been invented yet.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Tbf, like in my hometown, those signs are sometimes so stupidly placed that the only person who can see that sign are the ones at the front of the intersection.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The other day I had a person laying on their horn behind me, wanting me to turn right. Honking like a total a-hole. Little did he know there was a man walking in the cross walk, so he was suggesting I just run him over? 😂 people Are so obnoxious

by Anonymous 1 year ago

>laying on their horn behind me, wanting me to turn right. Honking like a total a-hole This is how you get the car in front of you to sit out the next green light. Whatever decency I have goes out the window when someone beeps at me like an asshole when I did nothing wrong.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That's how you end up getting shot. America!! :D

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The hundred other people behind that guy didn't do anything wrong though. Be better than that.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I would think it would be obvious that you shouldn't turn right on red if it isn't safe. However I live in a big car dependant city as well and have never been honked at while waiting to turn right on a red.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I actually got honked at once at an intersection said no turn on red 🤣 I was contemplating for waiting 5 more seconds after the light turned grn but decided road rage wasn't worth it lol.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Same never been honked at for this. Makes me think OP gets honked at because they might not be confident enough to turn when 90% of people would have gone.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Depends on the city. In some places, they honk if you DON'T drive like a maniac.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I was gonna say that this sounds like a case where someone doesn't act like a normal person but tries to present their view in a way that makes them look better. Maybe not the case, but I also have never been honked at and don't need a 20sec gap to get into traffic.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I've honked, but only when the car in front of me is clearly not paying attention. If you wanna be cautious? It's annoying but it's your right. If nobody is coming as far as the eye can see and you're just not turning, I'm honking until you learn how to drive.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In my city, I get honked at when there's a sign literally beside me that says "No right turn on red signal"

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The biggest issues I've noticed are where I live, nobody drives the same speed, and people always speed up to close the gaps in lines of cars. So yeah, that car may be far enough to where you could go, only if they're going the sped limit though, which they usually aren't. The other is people pulling way too far up in the left lane so you just can't see the cars coming. If I can't tell how fast someone is going or I can't see at all, I'm not going.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They like to change lanes in the intersections, where I live.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That's why if the person in front of me decides not to turn on red, I just let them be. I just assume they aren't comfortable turning and it's not like I have to wait very long

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Every time I hear about road rage, I feel more and more like I've got some weird superpower that allows me to genuinely not give a damn how angry the guy behind me is lol Honk all you want I am not turning into active traffic until there's a good opening.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

How often does this happen to you?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Absolutely agree. I've had a dude yell out his window, "you can turn right on red, ya know!!" And I was like, the cross traffic is going at least 45-55mph, and I can't see a thing past this jacked up F350 with a ballsack hanging from it's hitch, so you can wait, muchacho.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

If you can't turn on red because it isn't safe then you shouldn't. How in the world is this unpopular

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Because there are a lot more horrific drivers than you may realize. And even more driver who are just prone to impatience.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Just take your blinker off, when the light turns put it on and take the right. If there's oncoming traffic keep the blinker on for the other person opposing you not the jerk wad behind. And if someone honks behind…let ‘em honk or watch them try to drive around like a jackass. You're better off, why'd you want that psycho behind you. Probably rides ass the whole time. Best lesson my dad told me about driving. If your late you'll still be late no matter how fast you drive, however it won't matter at all if your dead in a ditch from speeding. So just take your time

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In the UK, if you have a red light, you ain't going anywhere until it's green again or there's a second green arrow light to show you can turn. I'd never heard of a red light you can pass through before, wild.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In Lithuania we sometimes have a green arrow sign (not a light) that indicates you can turn right on red if possible but they are getting phased out

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Interesting. It's so strange to me. I think I definitely prefer having the clear lights, with red meaning an absolute 'do not go'.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Driving just has such a toxic culture in the U.S.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Motorists who honk to intimidate you into doing *any* action you are not comfortable doing are an obnoxious menace.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yes, they're not making anyone safer. They're showing their poor driving skills and road rage.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

People who honk are usually hypocritical dick heads anyway.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I don't understand why people are mad at someone for saying they won't take a turn if they can't see properly to make sure the turn is safe. That seems pretty reasonable to me. Wouldn't it be far worse if they just took a blind turn of faith and caused a major accident or died? I feel like I'm missing something here.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Too many drivers in rush hour traffic are filled with rage and lack reason. They sometimes act like they would rather you have an accident than that they be inconvenienced for a few moments. Even though it's quite clear nothing about the commute is going to be convenient for anyone, and clearly, an accident would only make thing worse (even if it doesn't involve them!).

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I think the main issue people have is when it's clear to see and no traffic, the person turning right should be going. If it's not clear to see or there's traffic, obviously don't go.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm also confused lol Like they said they don't turn when pedestrians cross? That's a *good* thing. OP sounds like a safe driver

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I feel bad for people who really like pedometers.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Imo turning right on red should be illegal. Same with trying to beat a yellow light if you aren't already in the intersection. That's how I got hit yesterday while biking and broke my shoulder.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

if they honk i'm definitely not turning on red.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Safety is paramount, the person behind you can wait. I agree with this.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Unpopular opinion, if it's not safe to make a turn- I'm not going to make the turn. What a bold stance.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Judging by the amount of pushback, you'd swear this dude took a dump on Mandela's grave.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

When I was last in Finland (where right turns on reds are not allowed), I found it so much less stressful. And way safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I agree, I think people who try to pressure people before they are ready should be charged for distraction if an accident occurs.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You keep right on driving safe. YOU are the driver making that decision based on how comfortable you are with your skill, how your vehicle reacts, what your personal reaction times are, and what your visibility is. Safety when driving is important, never sacrifice it for someone else.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The vast majority of drivers are assholes.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Damn, in my country it's not legal to turn on a red arrow. It makes it pretty simple

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It's not legal to turn on a red *arrow* in the US, either. But in most states, unless there's a "NO TURN ON RED" sign, it's legal to turn right on a red cirlce *if the way is clear to do so*.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Oh interesting, that is still illegal in my country as well. We have a similar thing, in that sometimes it won't display any light at all, which means you can go if it is clear. Anything that is red means you cannot go however.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I feel the same way about turning left on a green circle or flashing yellow arrow. If there is any doubt whatsoever about if I would make it just fine in regards to traffic coming the other way, I'm waiting.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yes this has happened to me, and I really hate it. I don't like being pushed. If I'm sure it's safe to go, I'll go. Otherwise I'm waiting for the green light! But it makes me anxious to have people honking at me, and that doesn't make any of it any easier. I would probably have honked back but my previous car had the squeakiest little toy horn honk, just laughable, and so that taught me not to even try honking at anyone. (Probably wise!)

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Earlier this week I was honked at for not turning left at a yellow light (I was already in the intersection). Two cars sped through the light after it turned red in the other direction. If I had turned while the light was yellow I'd probably be in the hospital right now.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Related opinion: If you're going left or straight and you're in front of someone who wants to turn right on red, and there's room, inch up a little bit. I ALWAYS do this if possible, it feels really inconsiderate not to. It's crazy how many people are just oblivious to this and other similar situations.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I've lived in the US for over ten years after growing up in the UK, and my even more unpopular opinion is that laws allowing rights on red are dangerous and stupid, and they should all be repealed. Thank you, OP, for not pestering crossing pedestrians just to get somewhere thirty seconds earlier.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Where I live it's illegal to make a right on a red unless it's marked that you can do so, which is rare. You shouldn't make a right on red though if you don't feel comfortable doing so. People behind you who honk can't see what you see. They can't see that you're view down the perpendicular road may be obstructed by a bush or a parked vehicle, that a pedestrian may be crossing b/c they have the right of way, there's a curve in the road, or a car barreling down too fast for you to feel comfortable. But if none of these reasons exist and you're free and clear and where it's legal for you to turn on a red, it's common road courtesy to make the turn.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Definitely an unpopular opinion. If there is a huge gap or no cars at all, you better go

by Anonymous 1 year ago

What the hell? Why is it legal don't you guys have pedestrians? Sincerely, a confused German

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It's not a big deal unless there are NO cars coming and you're just sitting there waiting for a light to tell you to go. You go when you feel comfortable if cars are going by tho.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Sometimes I'll take my time and be careful making a right turn into a busy road, but I would also add that I have never gotten honked at for it, so I'd say that my caution was probably justified for those situations and the people behind me were able to tell I was making the right move. Chances are if you're getting honked at a lot for doing that, then you're probably just a bad, overly cautious driver. Please drive within reasonable caution, but don't be the person that turns my 15 minute commute into a 25 minute just because I got stuck behind you

by Anonymous 1 year ago

We need to normalize one way left on red
