Firstly, let's leave Wetherspoons out of the equation, because they are the McDonalds of the pub world. A pub is like a community sitting room. We don't have big houses for the most part, getting 10 friends together inside your house is usually a pretty cramped affair, so you go down the pub. You can be louder down the pub, you can laugh, you can joke, without upsetting your neighbours or the other people you live with, and none of you have to be the one to do the tidying up. I grew up in a village, the pub was the community meeting place, you'd see friends and neighbors. The old boys who lived alone would come together and play dominos. The dark colours is to give it a cosy atmosphere. It's not meant to be high energy, it's a place where you can sit and talk and stay awhile. It's restful. And although it's cheaper to buy a 6 pack of tinnies, beer from a cask tastes much better, and you'll have a better selection on offer.

Also, you do get some interesting beers in there. Some beers you can't buy in most shops.

Also at home I have to make my own cocktails which after a few drinks becomes a tad difficult. In pubs I can keep ordering, they taste better and there is even good food available if I go to a slightly high end location

Food is always basically a potluck, I've been to some places that have surprised me and others I've been woefully disappointed!

This actually sounds inviting. Australian pubs just feel like white trash gambling rooms.

I like pubs they feel cozy your surrounded by people all in a good mood. i feel when you drink at home you end up drinking too much if your with people or its lonely if your on your own. drinking in pubs kinda solves all those problems and its less stress if you were to drink at someones house

You may prefer a cocktail bar x

Nice thing about a pub is you need very little prior planning and organisation. You can just go, call people and meet them in a central location in an hour. And if you're in the mood for a certain type of drink you don't need to go out of your way to purchase it, it's just available at the pub

I hate the term "Randos" I always read it like it's a Mexican/Spanish name, "rrrr-and-hos''

I get your point, but finding that one pub that really meshes with you is great.

Wetherspoons are essentially just corporate dumps with cheap carpets, sticky bars, loud youths and dank air. But when you get a proper old-school pub (for instance with a pool table, dukebox, cozy atmosphere, nice drink, and in a close-knit community where people know eachother) then they're rather enjoyable. But they're quite rare these days sadly, especially where I am down south.

I don't care for britishness in any shape or form, pub "culture" is a prime example of that. It could be great if it was organic, like if an old hotel had a bar in that style and it was actually cozy. I like it in the scottish countryside. In the cities not so much. it feels like it's always just soulless chains with brown interiors and bad food. Cold, drafty, with "tellies" and blinking gambling machines. And "blokes", "geezers" and "madlads" asking you if you're pulling their legs while having a cheeky pint.

That's a specific type of pub you're talking about though. You'll find loads of pubs in cities that aren't the gambling machine pubs.

I bet. Saw a lot of those in london, it was like either that or kebab. Clientele seemed obnoxious, fighty, super drunk. But the idea of it, friendly local meeting place/living room, good beer, muted colors, that works.
