Planet Fitness is the best gym and is more than adequate for nearly everyone, amirite?
by Anonymous2 years ago
I *wish* there were gyms here for $10/month.
Closest gym to me is USD $11 per *week*, and it's not even fancy.
The one with a pool is USD $14 per week.
For $120/year, any gym is a bargain.
by Anonymous2 years ago
$14/week for a gym with a pool isn't bad if it's not gross. What gym? Is it in the US?
by Anonymous2 years ago
Nor the US, not a chain.
by Anonymous2 years ago
It's closer to $200 a year because there is an annual fee, but yeah it is still a good value.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I need free weights. I need bars with plates. I just can't do the smith machine.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Agree. Only using machines means stabilizer muscles don't get developed.
by Anonymous2 years ago
No barbells = inadequate for all
That said if you are serious about lifting at all nearly every commercial gym is inadequate
by Anonymous2 years ago
The best gym? Not by a long shot. Unless you consider 'the best' to be 'the cheapest'.
Adequate for most people? Sure.
by Anonymous2 years ago
They have a klaxon that goes off when you make a loud noise like drop a weight,
by Anonymous2 years ago
No squat racks, I don't care about smith machines, 1/10
by Anonymous2 years ago
Heh, as someone that had to deal with a LOT of Planet Fitness owners (and I really liked working with them) - their business practice is a bit suss to say the least. I'd be wary.
by Anonymous2 years ago
It is adequate for 95% of people I will admit.
But as a seasoned athlete (male or female) and actually progressing your lifts planet fitness should become obsolete after 6mos-1year.
The DBs aren't heavy enough, I need a barbell, smith machines are great but there is a time and place for them, Machine selection sucks, and the amount of people is nuts.
by Anonymous2 years ago
The amount of people is nuts because on average, a planet fitness location has to have 10000 members to be profitable. They're counting on 90% of them to never show up
by Anonymous2 years ago
It works for if you're starting out but you literally can't do normal squats or deadlifts with the smith machine.
Being able to squat with the smith machine doesn't teach balance, and range of motion is more limited. It has its place and can be good for some isolation exercises but you lose a lot of what you'd get from having a proper barbell.
PF does have pretty good free-weights so that's good, but until they have proper barbells/power racks it just doesn't cut it.
But no it's not a bad gym at all, just annoyingly limited.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Yeah I just wish they had better machines
by Anonymous2 years ago
I had a PF membership for a while and I really did like it, my only complaint being that it was ALWAYS packed no matter what time of the day I went so I would struggle to find open machines
by Anonymous2 years ago
I agree. It's more than enough for most people unless you're really serious about gym workouts or want the other amenities.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I need a gym where I can actually work out.
by Anonymous2 years ago
They let you work out there, it's a gym
by Anonymous2 years ago
that's a respectable opinion, most likely not unpopular -- but why so angry when you apparently found a place that you're happy with?
by Anonymous2 years ago
Right!? The main thing I like about my gym (not PF) is the vibe of the management and everyone else there. If OP is an accurate representation of the people who go to PF, then I'm good where I am at.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I went once and the DB's only went up to 50 and they didn't have benches or a squat rack. Just smith machine. Trash gym.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I need a power rack, free weights up to 220 kg and a safe area to drop weights with noise. Does Planet Fitness provide those?
If you geniunely think dropping weights is absurd or all you need is cardio, then I have to ask the question:
Do You Even Lift Bro?
by Anonymous2 years ago
The dropping weights policy is one of the few things I actually like about planet fitness. Nothing worse than deadlifters who insist on dropping 4 plates every rep. Makes so much noise and I'm pretty sure they just do it for attention. I never drop the bar during deadlifts
by Anonymous2 years ago
100% agree!
by Anonymous2 years ago
It's great except for the colors. That purple and yellow is the worst color combo on the planet.
by Anonymous2 years ago
The Lakers right now 😢
by Anonymous2 years ago
I like the purple
by Anonymous2 years ago
Planet fitness is trash
by Anonymous2 years ago
Not adequate for me, or at least 95% of the world population, as it's a US company, and I'm not in the US.
by Anonymous2 years ago
PF and their overly eager Karen staff and the siren is enough for me to write them off. I get them trying to protect the sensitive beginners from experienced lifters... actually... I don't.
When I started, I wasn't intimidated, I actually wanted to work out harder because of those groaning sweating overly exaggerated idiots who think they are impressing people by picking up heavy weights and putting them down.
But still, it's a gym. People make noise. You want a quiet workout? Go do taichi.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Lol protect beginners from what? Also, sirens? Sound awful.
by Anonymous2 years ago
That's their whole thing. They have a klaxon that goes off when you make a loud noise like drop a weight, grunt when lifting, or whatever else they feel could make beginners feel intimidated or uncomfortable. The Karen staff then comes to kick you out.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Does yours use the siren? I've only heard mine used once and it was before the pandemic
by Anonymous2 years ago
I don't go. Only tried it once and it was enough.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Me and a few friends tried it and he set the alarm off by saying ouch to loud after he tweaked his shoulder.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Sounds about right
by Anonymous2 years ago
I was using the free weights for shoulder press. Did the best I could to not drop them, but its not exactly easy so some noise was heard. the woman at the front desk stared at me continuously to let me know the cardinal sin I had broken. I looked away for a bit, only to find this woman still staring at me. I tried to be quiet, and it wasn't even that loud. I walked up to her, cancelled my membership and left.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Not american but don't they trap customers eith practices that are illegal where I'm from? I know some fitnes chains do.
by Anonymous2 years ago
The only way you can cancel your membership is to physically go in to your gym location or mail in a form. No way to do it online or even over the phone. Funnily enough you can sign up online no problem.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I heard that during the pandemic people couldn't cancel it even in person though. It could just be bs though, I have no idea
by Anonymous2 years ago
Also they require your bank account to do direct monthly charges. Lol. I like the gym for other reasons but this is a huge dealbreaker for many. I myself only use a buddy account.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I'm sorry but Planet Fitness sucks. The weights are not that heavy, it's always packed, every weight is taken, And the atmosphere is not so great there. I rather join a local gym, which I did, for approximately $30-$40 a month and get a real training session in for myself. Nothing is better than metal weights just clanking together and the heaviness helps you want to go past your limits
by Anonymous2 years ago
Yeah honestly I rather spend more money on a gym membership at a local gym. Which will have a better atmosphere and better variety of equipment and not just functional trainers, smith machines and a small amount of dumbbells that aren't heavy enough for anyone who's been working out seriously for a couple years.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I mean it was the place I built up my strength. I have built a home gym since then, but that was to avoid COVID not because planet fitness was inadequate.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I don't need these, but I do need my neck and don't plan to behead myself accidentaly from being startled and dropping my weight on my neck due to a loud ass alarm going off because that overweight dude three machines away farted too loudly.
And I don't even *live* in the same continent as these gyms.
by Anonymous2 years ago
I was starving and being horrifically cult abused and all I had to eat for the past two days was a one gallon of water and they confiscated it for "gymtimidation"… classist overweight dickbags man
by Anonymous2 years ago
Cult abused?
by Anonymous2 years ago
Correct they didn't look at the bags under my eyes or my low level shaking or any signs of why I might be underweight and were just some shallow unperceiving jerks
by Anonymous2 years ago
Honestly it is good until it gets busy or there's a weirdo. Sometimes I will pay the extra little bit somewhere else because some of the amenities are better
by Anonymous2 years ago
I think it's just those people who think you have to get gains and make major progress for a gym to be good. Nevermind the vast majority only care about staying in shape mote than growing muscle as much as possible. It fine for what most people need. But because you can't work out until you can left 1000 pounds they consider it a trash gym. Or they're upset they can't grunt and throw equipment on the ground.
by Anonymous2 years ago
The main problem with PF is the fact that they only have smith machines and not real benches or squat racks.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Anytime fitness >>> literally works with everyone's schedule
by Anonymous2 years ago
Must be the donuts and pizza that got you.
by Anonymous2 years ago
No free bench, no bball court, dumbells only go to 65 lbs.
Great gym to start off at, but if you have bigger goals you gotta level up from there. Great gym and great value, but not the best.
by Anonymous2 years ago
Personally, I like having a pool
by Anonymous2 years ago
I just wish they had saunas 😂
by Anonymous2 years ago
I have planet fitness because reasons but the lack of an actual squat rack really kills any kind of satisfying workout I'd like to do there.
by Anonymous2 years ago
They're all capitalist stooges for Big Gym, mate, cherish your rebellion ;)
