+120 Greeting cards are a waste of paper and should be eliminated. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

If this blows up, Hallmark will be sending someone to kill you and then sending a condolence card to your funeral.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

And then they'll make a romantic Christmas movie about it

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Then Lifetime will make a ripped from the headlines suspense movie oit of it.

If all you write on the card is "happy Birthday, love xxx" then I agree. But I love handwritten cards that actually say something personal and that someone took the time and effort to write. Some of those I cherish even more than any gift attached.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

me too! handwritten letters nowadays are really underrated. they are something to keep for a lifetime!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Agreed, they're pretty much pointless.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Make your own and print it out, lot cheaper and more meaningful

by Anonymous 1 year ago

One of my relatives used to know this old lady. And she would do this she had all of this crafting stuff. And anytime somebody had a birthday she would make a card for them by hand.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Have you ever gotten a card? That someone picked out and wrote in and took time out of their day to buy and prepare for you? Get someone to give you one and you might not have this opinion lol

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I have received beautiful greeting cards with lovely sentiment, but I would appreciate a hand written letter on a simple piece of paper just as much. It's kind of like the messages the important part and not so much what it is written on or how much money is spent on such...

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That makes sense, I don't think that is op's compliant though. Seems like they are just getting cards from the store with no personal message written in them besides from/love so and so.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

i would agree to this and greeting cards should have spaces for writing in them to make them more personal

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Cards are great except for with a birthday gift. I always skip the card and add the extra $5/$6 to my gift budget. Christmas cards, get well, condolence cards all still very nice.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I support this

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Completely agree. I tell all my friends/family not to buy me cards if they get me a gift. Grandma still buys the funny kid ones even though I'm 20 lol

by Anonymous 1 year ago

What a daring protest!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I'm not a sentimental person. I don't need or want a card, I've gotten plenty and even the most touching ones are forgettable at best.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

i could agree to this! you just remember them when you are really bored and started cleaning your stuff

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I love giving cards. I always try to write something sentimental for them too. Cards are all I have of my mom's handwriting. Looking back at them I am thankful I kept them and that she took the time to write something sweet. Even if there's no note, it's still nice knowing someone was thinking about you when they bought the card.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

it actually depends on the kind of person you are and your culture or society

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wtf is a greeting card?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I haven't given a card to anyone in years. My family all have this mentality and just spend more on the actual gift. Plus wrap the presents in like tea towels to save that waste.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

End Halmark holidays. Kill the greeting card. I'm very much in support of this. Just how unpopular is this?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Hallmark holidays aren't really real. Each big holiday in the US has history and was experienced and celebrated even before commercialism, even Valentine's Day and Mother's/Father's Day.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I've kept every paper greeting card I've ever received since I was a small child, all in a cardboard box. Maybe we should eliminate smartphones since little children mined the metals inside them, but that's not in *your* backyard so you probably look the other way.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They're only a $1 chill. If you spend more than that then you are truly dumb.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

'They're only..' from the peasantry is like music to the ears of the capitalist and authoritarian. Don't fall for it, man.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yeah anyways im going to continue to spend $1. Lmao its not that deep

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I like to draw my own

by Anonymous 1 year ago

My family hate me for this but I'd rather give them a slightly nicer present and not spend money on a card. I ask for no card and when I get one and they don't, they say 'Where's my card? I got you one '. Oh and adults who celebrate Halloween. Oh and people who say 'Yey, Starbucks red cups. It's 30 sleeps til Christmas. ' Horrible, simple folk.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I have a bunch of blank cards that I'll give (depending on the gift, occasion, and person) with a hand-written, relevant note in it. If I have nothing to say other than "happy birthday" "congratulations on the baby!" Etc. I'll skip it. Cards should be ways to share moments with people you care about that they can revisit over and over. Otherwise it's literally generating trash and it's no more useful than the tissue paper in the gift bag.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That settles it. I'm buying every bulk box of greeting cards I can find and an entire town is getting them from me. Why not my own town? I'm not *that* weird.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I agree. I think most of them are given only because it's customary to do.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Is a piece of printer paper, folded into quarters, and decorated by one's self or child, a greeting card? DIY greetings

by Anonymous 1 year ago

My only memories of my first love are his cards. He died in 1985. I can't imagine a world without them.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

If it has a decent hand written note that's cool then. Not honestly just the hand written note is great. I save all mine have a stack from over the years kind of nice to read them

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Personally I prefer just blank correspondence cards, except for Christmas cards (in which case festive ones are nice). I'd probably like more greeting cards if their designs weren't mostly so childish.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You can use it for starting fire 😅

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They are but it is one of those things, it seems weird without one. Just "here is a gift" with no message or anything attached to it. You don't have to go OTT with it though with anything personalised or expensive. You can get packs of generic cards with nice pictures on, just use those.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Tell that a Greeting Cards Designer (Me).

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I like to write in them and fill it up. Empty gift cards letting someone else speak for you is sad.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Way I see it cards are basically part of the decorative packaging, you could do away with it along with all the wrapping and ribbons entirely and just give the gift in whatever shopping bag it came with when you bought it. If you think there's any merit at all to the decorative/festive packaging then I don't see why the card in particular would be singled out as wasteful.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Hallmark would like to have a word with you

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Band together. Rid of this scourge! We can't be dicks during the holidays if *everyone is a dick.*

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I mean, you can probably tell people to save their money and not give you a card. I like getting cards. When I give cards, I usually give the cheap ones from Dollar Tree because I know they'll be thrown away. I have saved ones that my boyfriend has given me in the past 2 years and some birthday & Christmas cards from my friends because they are special to me.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Giving a greeting card with a gift is no longer required. Hell, I haven't purchased a greeting card in many years. Just, don't buy them.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I make my own cards and I hope too many people don't feel this way about receiving them!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You are supposed to write stuff in them... I keep cards from my partner where loving messages were wrote inside of them.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I like the little ones on the gift bags but those are the only other exception aside from gift cards/cash

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They're over priced as hell and 9/10 times end up in the trash.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I would rather get a card over a gift. I usually just buy whatever is I want and it becomes a chore for me to give gift ideas.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You realize that you don't *have to* give a card, don't you? And just because you (or anyone else) get annoyed by something to an irrational degree, isn't reason enough why it should be "eliminated".

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You're so right, like it actually is a waste of paper. It's a sign of consideration and respect when giving it, but after a while the receiving person will most likely throw it away. Plus greeting cards have been getting quite a bit expensive lol. I rather invest that money into the actual gift than the card

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Hard disagree. I love receiving cards from loved ones. The effort to go out and buy a card, write a nice note on it, and mail it out is pretty nice in this age of the internet where most things can be done at a click of a button.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Junk mail is a much bigger waste of paper. Can we get rid of that first?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I have felt this way for a long time. I have moved around so much. I purged those bad boys and said never again. My little will make people cards. I think I will do the same.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wait until you learn about ad mail...

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I guess this is one of those times it is more advantageous to be a male.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I always feel bad throwing them out, so I have a shoebox with a ton of them in there over the years.
