Software Developers That Refuse To Help Fix Their Relative's Technology Problems Are Just Lazy, amirite?
by Anonymous2 years ago
Actually there is a surprising number of software engineers that don't know how to troubleshoot a printer. This is mainly because tech support deals with printer repairs, not the software engineers.

This is oddly specific

So are the software engineers family members required to perform their job related functions for him for free at any given time?
If one is a cook at a restaurant are they required to go over to the software engineer's house and make his meals for free?
If one is a mechanic are they required to go over to his house and change his oil for free?
You see where I'm going

Try it as an IT support guy, last thing you want to do is more IT support after a long day's work.

Why would my ability to analytically query large data sets give me the ability to fix a printer?
Do I make printers? Nope. Do i fix printers? Nope. Do i work for a company that sells or manufactures printers? Nope. I dont even own my own printer.
So why do you think i can fix yours?

I'm down to help. But it always ends up me working while visiting for the holidays, which I don't mind because I like to do that stuff. That's more what annoys some people. They just want to not work while visiting relatives.

I can and almost always do that kind of thing for my family but honestly the only thing I do 50% is cable management 50% reading the screen and 50% turning in and off. I do understand that it comes from a place of not understanding so I try my best to help when I can

So Landscapers/plumbers/contractors/electricians/finance managers/mechanics....etc...
Point is, it's not the work it's the timing, the way your asked, an understanding that things don't just magically fix, and most of all some effort to try and prevent the problem in the first place by becoming knowledgeable of what you want and what you've done

Haha that's like saying you're a massage therapist. If I don't work out all my family members kinks and pains I'm lazy lol.

Brah . I'm a software developer, not a IT specialist. I can't fix hardware. I have to pay someone else to fix mine
