+150 I want to see more shows with People who are smart, emotionally well-adjusted, and competent making good informed decisions with critical thinking and planning, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The show would get boring very quickly because there'd be far less conflict and interesting scenarios. This complaint is like when people get mad about characters in horror movies making dumb decisions. If they don't make those decisions, there's no movie.

The West Wing was on the air for 7 years, and it was rare to have a legitimately stupid or narcissistic person on the show. Drama came from high stakes situations, the inherent complexity of the world, and the political wheeling and dealing necessary to get anything done.

It's difficult, I reckon, to write such characters and still have a compelling backstory, conflict, etc. Real people have flaws and baggage. Media is often a way we go about- consciously or unconsciously- reflecting on those things and life in general. Having flawed characters or characters with baggage that influences their behavior for the worse makes them relatable and engaging. I will agree, though, there are a lot of shows with characters that are unjustifiably stupid, and many arguments/conflicts break down to a lack of communication, making them way too easy to have avoided.

lots of shows like that. just browse educational and informative categories on netflix and youtube

I don't necessarily need stable character but I want a plot or antagonist that is the clear problem of the story rather than the characters just acting stupid. Especially true for romance. I'm so sick of them just not communicating and acting like that's enough to keep the readers interested. The best characters are ones who always act in their best interests with the knowledge they have. Mistakes can happen but they come from not knowing something or being mislead rather than incompetence.

You would love the owl house on Disney plus.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

basically you just want a TV show where someone wakes up in the morning and goes to work and comes home and greets their family and then goes out and sees their friends and then goes to bed early so they can wake up the next day refreshed and ready for work.

That sounds great, sure. I'd like to watch someone live the life I wish I could. Peak fiction!

Slice of life

>People who are smart, emotionally well-adjusted, and competent making good informed decisions with critical thinking and planning How many people do you know that are actually like that? People are flawed, everyone has failings and weaknesses. I think you are going too far in the opposite direction if you had a whole cast of well smart, adjusted, competent stable characters because no one is actually like that. Everyone is an idiot sometime. There's no drama there and there is sure as hell no comedy there.

Give me an example of a show you are talking about. Cause on paper, this sounds a bit dull and boring. People driven to extremes and not being able to handle those extremes is what makes for good entertaining television. Emotionally driven, but flawed characters are compellings. Whats the appeal of non-conflictive, functional adults just making rational choices and assuming responsibility for them?

Lots of shows like this. For example Star Trek shows are usually highly competent people executing at a high level.

Big Bang Theory started this way I think. They weren't dramatic idiots, they were super intelligent nerds with no social skills because they were almost to smart for their own good

Jeopardy?

So, you're in to fantasy then?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

This would mean the characters have no room for growth and the controversy would clear up fast

You should watch Fargo

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I for one would love that.

Ted Lasso

Have you seen breaking bad?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I suggest you start watching Anime. There is plenty of Anime that good with compelling characters. I can suggest you some.

That'd just be people sitting around reading books and sipping drinks from glasses placed on coasters.

If you haven't already, you should watch Star Trek. Specifically The Next Generation. It's on Netflix, it's awesome and it certainly fits your description.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

So star trek while not always stable its better than most shows

PoliceActivity on YouTube is pretty good considering it's real life body camera footage.

I want to live in a country where people don't think that TV has to perfectly reflect our ideal world and that the presence of flawed characters is a sign of social decay rather than just dramatic storytelling.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

it wouldn't be entertaining if this show existed (probably low viewership) but maybe seeing a well-adjust person experience real life is trending nowadays

Dysfunction and toxicity creates conflict which is storytelling 101. If you want shows with more rounded, intelligent characters check out things like Better Call Saul, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, White Lotus, Six Feet Under, Atlanta, Succession. If you want shows with no tension whatsoever, watch Teletubbies.

Doctor Who!!!

Yeah. I miss The West Wing too.

Because in reality no one is sane. As psychologist carl jung said "Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you"

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Idk many people that fit this bill.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I mostly agree. Yes, people tend to think with their emotions rather than logic. However, there should be good reasons that they're so emotional -- reasons that the story establishes through character development. TVTropes has a few entries about this, the most obvious being the "idiot ball": a character suddenly starts doing things that no one with two brain cells would think is a good idea, without any reason to do so.

I don't watch to watch a show where everyone is smarter, more competent, wealthier, healthier, well adjusted, blah, blah, blah. It would just emphasize everything that sucks about my life. On the other hand, watching someone whose life is a dumpster fire makes me fell pretty good about my life, and it lifts my spirits.

It might help being able to find happiness in something besides others' misfortune.

We're talking about fictional characters here.
