Disagree, unless the item in question is prohibitively expensive if I would find it useful I'd buy it for myself. Best gift in my opinion is activities or events the recipient would enjoy, but not purchase for themselves. My reasoning is twofold: high level of excitement when you've purchased the right gift, they don't have another item cluttering up their home that may or may not be useful or in their taste.

the word ur looking for is a Practical Gift but i agree practical gifts are great last minute gifts. wouldnt say their best but you cant go wrong with them
