+149 DDMMYYYY is the worst way to write the date, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

>When finding a date on a calendar, in day-to-day conversation we can usually assume we're dealing with the current year, so that comes last. Then why isn't that something in favour of DDMMYYYY? In day-to-day conversation we can usually assume we're dealing with the current month. You say the current day, then the month if you need to clarify, then the year if you need further clarification.

Hey man, what day do you wanna meet? February.

YDMYDMYY is much worse!

This is how I usually write the date, it'll catch on someday

22106222 (today's date in this format)

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Sorry I'm a day later here in Asia, it's 22107222 now

by Anonymous 1 year ago

When I ask for the date. I'm really asking for the day and not the month and year

by Anonymous 1 year ago

What if you're a time traveller and are asking for the year

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In my profession, we write the date like: 26DEC22 or 26 DEC 2022 I like that it's not all numbers and instead the first three letters of the month. Waaay quicker to read.

Virgin DDMMYYYY vs Chad DDMMMYYYY

Albeit all numbers does have the bonus of being independent of language.

Damn you Europeans with your rationale measurements of weight and distance and common-sense method of writing dates. We Americans will keep our barbarian ways in line with our wild spirits. Do you know why we write dates MMDDYYYY? We do it because it makes no sense. Because it is contrary to reason and inane and that give us pleasure! God bless the USA!!!

Outside North America, DDMMYYYY is just how it's done in most contexts. YYYYMMDD is great for archiving. MMDDYYYY is just stupid and contrary.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yea cool opinion anyway here's a fact about calendars: The word "calendar" is derived from the Latin "calendarium" meaning "interest register" or "account book".

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I can understand YYYYMMDD for the purpose of tagging storage/archived items. Other than that, DDMMYYYY is superior to any other format in everyday life.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

it's the best way

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Just use today, tomorrow etc and get rid of those silly numbers.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

But we do day the day first, so writing it otherwise makes no sense

You must be from Al-Qaeda. No disrespect to them.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

If the computer reads it YYYYMMDD is ideal, for human DDMMYYYY is ideal. MMDDYYYY Is a handed down illogical format.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Starting with the year is so dumb. If someone asks you what day it it you'll never go well it's the year 2022 in the month of December on the 26th. Like how stupid does that sound.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Idc about year usually. But I work with data so I know where you're coming from. Just don't be such nerd lol MMDDYYYY is what people want imo. Some just grow up used to the day first

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Who cares what's better December 26, 2022, is December 26, 2022. Not like using one or another will crash like a space ship

by Anonymous 1 year ago

since when is this opinion unpopular ?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Not if you were raised and taught it. Then it's the easiest and best way to write it.

Arguing that MMDDYYYY orders it by importance and utility doesn't work since there's just as many cases where the day as more important and month can be inferred as there are cases where the month is what matters and the day is a bit too granular. For example, you might say "I'm going on holiday on the 16th" and it can be inferred that you're referring to the next 16th in the calendar. Or if you're told that "final exams are on the 20th" and you know the school year has exams in June, then you might not need the month. Since neither part of the date is that much more important than the other, we just go with DD/MM/YYYY. Since it'd be most logical to at least order in ascending units if you gotta choose an arbitrary choice.
