by Anonymous 1 year ago

If only there were legal protections for things like that...

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Just out of curiosity, where are you located? I am assuming that has some impact on your perceptions of unions. Because where I am from not much of that stands true if any of it.

I don't think this buddy realizes *every* good thing about his/hers/their jobs are solely because of unions. Talk about lack of grasp

Union electrician here. Don't listen to this guy

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Same here. This guy seems to just have a personal vendetta against someone in his job.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Agreed. As a union tinner, I can't think of anywhere else that I could make the same amount of money on 40hr weeks, have good health insurance and a pension with just a HS diploma. When it comes to the trades, union is better 99.99% of the time.

Former union package handler here, I agree with op, Union jobs DO suck.

Union roofer, i make $50 an hr w beni's. I love my job.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I made $14 an hr, with very little hours and only 10 minutes for a break every other day... if we were lucky.

Maybe some union jobs suck, and some are awesome

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Have you considered that other folk's experiences might be different?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

What did the union do that made the job suck?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

My dad was a union plumber and made big bucks, we always had excellent insurance, and his pension was outstanding.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Hes not wrong, but not for these reasons mentioned. I left the IBEW for a reason.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I like my union, they doubled my pay & gave me a pension. Sorry about yours!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yeah my union saved me from layoffs and furloughs last year, so I can't agree with the OP

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Every union set up is different, I don't really have much extra security and could be laid off from my current company as soon as it gets slow. I just go to the next company that is part of the trade union and keep my pay scale and all other benefits. I have never experienced any of the things you mentioned.

You sound like someone who was hired by a billionaire CEO to disseminate anti-union propaganda.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You ever worked in a union?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yup

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wow, management sucks, there's a revelation! That's *why* we need unions. If every job unionized they wouldn't be able to act like that.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Never had that problem with my union job.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Someone didn't make it past the 90 probation period and they're big mad.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Ya this sounds like a problem with management (if its just been this job/experience) or a problem with the industry itself (some are just toxic). Or it could just be a ‘you' problem. Either way kudos for an actual unpopular opinion.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Damn, that sucks for you

I worked a union job for 40 years. My employer was a jerk but I didn't look at it that I was working for the company. I was working for my family, my benefits, and my retirement that my employer didn't control. And I was working for and with my coworkers to be sure we all had the best work experience we could have. I've ended up having far more because of the union and a better work experience.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Clearly you've never worked for a good union 3 months probation is the same everywhere too, what a bad point

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I don't think this dude unions correctly.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

The biggest issue with union jobs is lazy worthless co-workers who have zero business being there but the union continues to save their job.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

My experience with working in a union, and building software for union shops, has left me with the opinion that they're the most dysfunctional work environments. I have long suspected that the people defending unions either are suffering from survivor bias or benefit from the dysfunction. The reason I say that is unions are disappearing from the private sector as unionized companies have a habit of going out of business; and it is likely that good union shops stay in business while the dysfunctional ones fail.

Wow how to say you're a corporate shill without saying you're a corporate shill. Unions are great. Don't listen to this guy. That being said a true unpopular opinion.

I think it depends on where you are. I was a grocery store cashier under a union for almost 10 years, and didn't really feel all that supported or protected, especially when the store found a way to get rid of me. Soured me towards unions for a while. I've since become a school bus driver, and the difference between the union here and at the grocery store is like night and day. Terrific benefits, and the reps have been very attentive towards me, and the other drivers. I've got no complaints so far.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

This isn't an unpopular opinion; it's just factually incorrect.

Writers, actors and professional athletes are in unions but okay.
