Ghibli movie romance is terrible (specifically howl and mononoke) amirite?

I am glad they did'nt develop the romance in Spirited Away. Great film, but I like to pretend the romance did'nt exist. She was a kid and the spirits were ancient, was strange to say the least...

I wonder if it's bad romance, or just the japanese culture being different when it come to romance.

Maybe! I can't get into their style of storytelling usually. Most japanese films I've watched (especially ones praised for being emotional) feel too dragged and I never feel attached to the characters since stuff feels so random.

I love japanese animation, but I too have a hard time with the romance part most of the time. But for the emotional part, I think they handle some of them really great; loss for example.

I'll definitely watch that!
With my earlier reply i meant stuff like erased and the one with the deaf girl, i forgot it's name.

**A Silent Voice** I guess? I didn't saw it, but I imagine it's the same style as **Your Name**, which I didn't really enjoy despite the awesome reviews.
If you didn't saw them, I recommand Mamoru Hosoda movies (e.g. Wolf Children, Summer Wars, The Boy and the Beast, Belle). Less heavy on romance but deeply emotional.

Silent voice yeah. It's why i put off watching your name, i feel like I'd dislike it.
Also, during the ghibli discussion one of my friends did mention that they liked Mamoru Hosada movies better! I'll give them a shot.
And man, Wolf Children.. that was the first physical manga i ever read, i love that manga so much.
