+170 A few more decades of the internet is going to result in less opportunities outside of a 9-5 job. amirite?

The internet is a double edged sword. It dramatically lowers the cost of entry in a lot of businesses, and makes it far easier for individuals to be successful in careers that used to be pretty exclusive, but it also destroys a lot of low skilled jobs. You can now make a pretty decent living as a musician, game developer, artist, actor, comedian, or countless other creative positions but these are not low skilled fields that are accessible to the masses. An indie game developer can now make a game by himself/herself, sell it for $10, and if they sell 25,000 copies make a pretty comfortable living. I envision a future where lower level athletes in many sports can earn a more reasonable living as fans of a team start watching games of their minor league affiliates. I'm not saying all fans, but if 10% of fans watch the affiliate games that dramatically increases the revenues for these teams. With that said, I would not be surprised to see most fast food restaurants and chain stores to be automated in the next 10 to 15 years. People will buy products online, have them picked up or delivered to their home, and the companies will be thrilled because their $50,000 machine is cheaper and more reliable than a minimum wage employee. Even the retail and food service jobs that exist will be more demanding because the customer service will be seen as the purpose of their job. Someone giving mediocre customer service will not be acceptable in these positions, and employees who aren't able to be the best representative of the company will not be kept around.

Isn't a big part of that not hostility per se, but you need that much more money to advertise versus the giants already doing that business?

I think the opposite is true. The things needed to operate a business have become all the more easier because of the internet. Searching ideas, license info, buying bulk from overseas, finding manufacturers, using drop-shipping, setting up a website, etc is so much easier now than it's ever been.
