If the plan is to make people laugh and breaking character makes people laugh then it's the plan isn't it? People who have no idea under what kind of timeline SNL is made always say stuff like this.

It depends *how* they do it. It's like saying "people falling over isn't funny". Well it really can be, and it can also be extremely sad or scary. ​ Some "funny" things like that may also be part of a build up to another joke or building a specific atmosphere for other jokes.
