He's a literal goofball, he can only be taken seriously by so much. Yes he's a monster that kidnaps Peach on an all too regular basis, but he is also a goofy guy with a brawn over brains attitude who is trying to be a good father on his off times, and takes time to go golfing with his nemesis and friends.

Personally, while I do also feel the casting should have been better, I do not think Martinet is cut out for the role. Mario, when voice by him, is voiced in typically one word phrases instead of sentences. I think it would get irritating very quickly if he played Mario.
