+159 Using garbage bags in small trash cans is stupid and wasteful. amirite?

You want people putting used pads and used tampons, condoms etc directly into your garbage can?

Sure yep throw it in there. It's not like I'm touching it when I dump the can into a bigger trash bag to dispose it all at once. 🤷🏼‍♀️

You are when they dry and stick to the sides.

Haha fair but that's what they make rubber gloves for! Although this isn't something that usually happens in my household. You could wrap stuff like that in TP before throwing it away too.

I've had the same small plastic bag in most of my small trash cans for awhile now. I simply dump the trash (not the bags) in the larger trash bag when its trash day. They really exist for the 1-off moments, where you throw something that leaks and/or reeks into it. It cuts down on cleaning and doesn't really use many bags.

This is the same thing I do. Unless I have to throw something gross in the bag I just dump it and reuse it. I used to throw away the whole bag every time but my area eliminated single use grocery store bags so I've been rationing the ones I have left. I should have started doing that years ago.

Totally get this and if you have to use one, reusing it is the way to go - so kudos. I think a lot of people prefer the easiest option these days even if it produces more waste instead of just using a lil elbow grease.

I just use grocery store bags that I end up with to use in small trashcans.

This is what I do. I had 5 walmart bags full of walmart bags at one point. Im almost out now due to using reusable grocery bags.

I mean, certain things leave a smell even if you clean it after. Trash bags are more convenient and avoid gross messes.

Fair! Especially in plastic. I opt for mostly metal cans. I feel like it's also feasible to consolidate those things into your main trash bag you know?

I think it's a matter of personal preference. Some people like the convenience of using a bag, while others don't mind cleaning out the can regularly.

it saves time

Don't think this is an unpopular opinion, but yes, I agree. I only use 100% biodegradable bags for my kitchen trash. No bags anywhere else.

You'd be surprised! I've had this discussion with a bunch of people and they ~have~ to have their lil trash bags

If I had to clean out the can I would need disposable gloves and a special sponge I'd probably replace after every second use. Right now I'm using grocery bags and produce bags in my trashcans so I doubt there's as much damage there.

The majority of litter on the sides of roads and freeways comes from waste management vehicles— I have been behind garbage trucks on freeways countless times and there is always garbage flying out of the back. If you're worried about wastefulness for environmental purposes, then it might be important to note that throwing out loose garbage that's not contained in a bag is likely doing more harm than good.

Trash in bags stays at the landfill and doesn't blow around and create more litter elsewhere...

For my small waste baskets, I use plastic shopping bags from stores as my garbage bags.
