+155 Not knowing one little fact or a term/word definition is a bad way to measure intelligence, amirite?

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. We should encourage curiosity and a love for learning, not shame people for what they don't know.

Although I do agree this is acutally part of how they measure intelligence and ability, atleast here. I recently took an intelligence test related to my autism diagnosing process. This test included questions related to understanding of words, finding likeness between words / objects , remembering numbres, rearrangning numbers (ex tester says 1983 and you are to repeat them backwards), simple math, and pattern recogniton These tests were grouped up into 4 categories which I do not remember the name of but they were pretty much groups containing the similar tasks. One of them were Verbal having the wrod tasks etc. On this one I scored about 66th percentile, meaning that 44% are better than me at this. I scored about the same on most of them except the math one were I scored 98th percentile. My result IQ was 112, which is still within what's considered average but it's in the higher range. So even though I'm according to this test extremely good at math and numbers, my final IQ score was still pulled down because I didn't know what certain words meant. Like it or not it's an actual measurement of intelligence, but I fully do think that if you do not know the meaning of a word you should ask. Curiousity is what makes this world move forward, and no one should be called stupid or shamed for it. How else would you learn?

My martial arts coach told me after my first day that he could learn something from anyone, or situation. I always liked that.

right, there's a difference between intelligence and knowledge. I don't think this is an opinion, you are just defining the words.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

People you know think that? I have seen only people that I don't know assume stuff so quickly.

I agree. True intelligence shines through in ones use of grammar, or lack thereof.

I've come across this behavior a lot and only understood the psychology behind this after growing up. Many people are desperate to assert dominance. This dominance assertion can be done in many ways- physical, intellectual, etc.

Well, I'm pretty sure most IQ tests measure problem solving and critical thinking abilities rather than random trivia anyway, so there you go.

OP's point is that a lot of people judge intelligence off of random trivia, which is really dumb. Geography is a popular one people like to use to show how smart they are and how dumb others are. Somebody who has difficulty placing Kosovo on a map isn't dumb. They're just not fantastic at geography

Everyone has gaps in their knowledge. Only people who are stupid themselves don't understand that.

Not a good way to measure intelligence, but this is a good way to measure how fragile your ego is

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yeah,it's like that…Y'know, that thing… ( ^ Could be the smartest guy in the room) ‘Smart' is relative in *so* many ways, there's no true measure except for situational and total.

Judging anyone's intelligence on any one thing is stupid. No one can know everything about everything. That's like saying someone is dumb because they don't know the history of the green Christmas pickle.

Ignorance is not the same as stupidity. If someone has poor general knowledge, they are not stupid, they might however be uneducated or have a very narrow education.

Intelligence is the ability to learn and think critically. Not a measure of your memory
