+146 Travel does not inherently improve you as a person. amirite?

Well you talked yourself out of your premise by referring too Twain. The art of travel is not obtained in a weekend or two. It is years and years of travel and the travails you endure that shaped your character.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

tell that to people who claim it as one of their strengths...sure it builds character to walk into the unknown and uncomfortable but you could also argue that travel like in Twain's day is barely even possible, let alone popular.

It's not travel per se, but a person's impetus behind it, what they get out of it, and what they do with what they've gained from the experience.

Idiot Abroad

no of course not. my cousin travels to an all inclusive resort to Mexico every year and has made many trips to Las Vegas. her perspective hasn't changed.

Travel is a jerkoff and a commercial.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

It definitely depends on how you go about it. Some people travel to a different country just to spend the entire time at a resort. And the resort is run by a company from their country of origin.

The change in your perspective can sometimes be incremental and not noticeable, but over time I believe seeing things being done differently may eventually affect how you think about certain things. It's not always black vs white

If all you're doing is travelling to all-inclusive resorts and not see anything outside that, then no it doesn't do anything. Neither does just visiting all the tourist traps. I personally think everyone should get out of their hometown and travel though, even if it is just to see the sights and tourist traps. It gets you away from the same old place that you grew up in even if it is just for a few days or couple weeks.

The old saying goes, problems will follow you wherever you go. So as much as you may become more knowledgeable about different countries and their cultures whilst expanding your network of friends, it doesn't necessarily mean you're more beneficial to the world and it's various societies as a whole. I'm sure there's plenty of people who travel all over the place and don't really learn much or grow personally either. They're just vacationing. If that's the case they're just wasting money and fuel in order to support an extravagant lifestyle which is pretty unnecessary and actually quite smug. Personally, I certainly wouldn't hold a frequent traveller to any higher reverence than a blue collar professional who respected the limits of his economic footprint and mastered his own craft. If anything the ladder.

I always got a kick out of the "I love to travel" BS and it was just pics and pics of drinks on a beach and hiking trail. There is a way to enrich yourself by traveling and a way to travel for IG likes.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

What's wrong with hiking :(

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Nothing

by Anonymous 1 year ago

EXACTLY. it's all very disingenuous.

I love to travel. I love drinking on beaches and hiking. Who cares. I don't even have IG.

If you can't travel and not learn something, you wouldn't survive the journey. Just getting out there, stepping outside home or country comforts and going to other places is a learning experience. I would definitely say someone who hasn't travelled will lack certain experiences that can be learned from. Doesn't make them better or worse, we're too complex for that, but it's still something. There are people who place too much emphasis or think it's some magical spiritual thing which it isn't. It can be a great thing though.

I've spent the last 6 years on and off working in a resort town...trust me, you can go elsewhere and learn nothing.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

A resort town? That's not what people mean by traveling. That's a holiday.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

So in other words... you can travel and learn nothing? 😮

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Traveling =\= Holidays

Yeah, I prefer not spending a ton of money and instead using my time to do work (that I need to do to survive) over contributing to fossil fuel emissions while displacing marginalized people! I can learn about cultures and people by doing research too. (or maybe I'm socially anxious and have no energy most of the rimes)

I live in a country which is popular with tourists. They go to beautiful places. Take selfies and leave almost immediately. Why burn up the environment for a photo if you don't care where you are?
