+141 Even if we all spoke the same language we wouldn't understand everyone, amirite?

People frequently interpret words differently from one another. And for someone with autism, I feel like I have an inexplicable language barrier with other people

I can relate to this, I feel like people from different cultures or background speaking their versions of english are completely different languages. I have to really lean in and listen with no background noise. I work with a couple poc guys and when they get to talkin' to each other I literally have to just act like I got distracted by something else and pretend that's the reason I checked out the conversation. It's embarrassing.

There's also inflection and slang, which can be different regionally, personally, and even generationally. Talking is hard.

I feel like it's probably got a lot to with my sheltered upbringing. White neighborhoods, and my mother made me read Chaucer and the like, and insisted that I enunciate properly when I speak. If you asked me what kind of accent I have I'd say none other than just American? I don't sound southern, or northern, I don't say ta-koh, I do sometimes use ya'll where I notice a lot of others do not, but I use contractions for simplicity's sake. I also hate saying the word "remember." My mouth stumbles on that one constantly.

You could try saying 'recall' instead of 'remember'. Means the same and can be used the same way as well as just being shorter and easier to say.

even more so, some people speak sarcasm more fluent than the language they're taught, some joke and laugh with no intent behind it, and some joke and laugh with hatred in their hearts. personally, I've joked about hate and meant nothing by it, and for this, I am judged by those around me. eh, it's my own fault really :)

Yep, can't really know if some just use the comedy as a veil to forward hate. Or they are really just taking the piss. That's why I say some jokes only in my head, then laugh at nothing from an outside perspective.

Put any two people in a room, and they *will* find something to disagree on, often vehemently.

Put me alone and I find something to disagree with me🤣

I already don't know if you mean that we wouldn't get the same interpretation due to not being clear in explaining or due to mumbling/speaking with a heavy accent; so either way you're right.

So are blind and deaf people dead, or are they excluded in your theory?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Them included

People understand different words differently. Thats why good debates start with definition of terms.
