Until the average life expectancy is 100 or 110 years old then imprisonment will still be a harsh punishment. Right now the average Life expectancy is within the 70s for most nations.

I mean it depends. Imagine having to spend your entire life and then dying in a prison because you were sentenced to 140 years. I feel like that's worse than just dying quickly.
