I think it's the opposite. The birds' ability to mimic other animals allowed them to scare off predators. I think their abilities are way more useful in the wild than in a cage.

This. Today we see their communication as entertainment. They utilized it as developed instinctual behavior which would've likely been used to mislead predators.
