+131 Membrane keyboards are better than mechanical keyboards, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Mechanical keyboards don't make me type faster but my fingers are less fatigued then when pressing those mushy buttons. As for the noise, I live alone. So, who cares? Also there are switches that are not noisy. Mechanical keyboards are customizable, which is a big deal for me since I want my keyboards to have a unique look.

Pretty sure I'd still prefer membrane

\*Some\* mechanical keyboards are customizable, the even more expensive ones, but for me even those are not enough. For instance, there is no customizable mechanical keyboard in the world that can provide me with glyphs and layout I need for my language (Eastern European QWERTZ Latin).

Membrane keyboards are cheaper yes.

Just shows you know nothing about keyboards. If your key fails on a membrane, that's the whole keyboard out. If a key fails on a mechanical, you simply swap that one switch.

Except you need to have exchangeable switches, which is on only about 1% of all mechanical keyboards, expensive AF, just for professionals who have backup switches or channels to quickly acquire them. On the other side, membranes rarely break, but mechanical switches pretty often.

yeah but at a replacement cost of $15 ($10 if I go with a wired one) I think that's a risk worth taking

But a key won't normally fail, there's nothing mechanical going on else the keycap breaks... somehow. it's just two traces on the silicone with a conductive pad to touch them to complete the circuit.
