I've never heard the argument that we need a larger population to sustain retirement benefits.

I have heard, however, the debate that we need more workers and more jobs for said workforce, but that doesn't exactly need to equate to a larger population.

Sadly I've heard it said a lot. That we have to pay into these systems because it is designed that way.

As if nothing can be designed again or changed.

But I do agree with your second point. Although sometimes that is a question of a living wage and other social issues that again people are putting forth bad points because they don't really want to address the reality of the situation.

I still don't understand how that equates to the need for a larger population...

People are living longer. For every old person you need more than 1 young person to pay into the system.

Say you have 10 old person being supported by 50 young people, eventually those 50 young people become old people. Then you need 250 young people to provide the same amount for those 50 old people.

You need enough workers to pay into social security to pay for the benefits of retired people

'You need enough workers to pay into social security to pay for the benefits of retired people"

I understand that, but the population is already large enough. More jobs and more people working in our existing population those jobs would solve that.

Honestly, I don't even know why I'm debating my point. I don't believe either scenario is the answer, lol.

Heres my solution to old people. Turn all the closing malls into retirement resorts for gezers with different themes. There could be the gun loving republican mall or the I hate immigrants resort. Old malls into old age retirement villages

I noticed you said at least twice what you think will not work but not a mention of what your solution is.

Hard to mention any solutions to population control without entering a downward spiral debating eugenics and eventually being accused of wanting to cause a genocide.

Hmm.

Not sure what the premise of the argument for larger population even comes from, but most species, including humans, need a significant positive replacement rate to avoid extinction.

You're right. I don't know who is arguing with you, the truth is we are working to serve our own self-interest. A larger population wouldn't solve societal issues for that reason. A larger population would mean for the government more money to take from people and for 1% it means more people to take advantage of.

Families should be forced to care for aging family. Community and family working together to preserve the dignity of the elders, larger population of helpful humans is needed.

But like isn't 75 long enough... there are people in their twenties, paying taxes for social security, who may die young. The old should do the gracious thing and sacrifice old age for the benifit of the youth who may not live to see retirement
