+138 Tintin is infinitely better than Avatar, amirite?

It seems like you're talking about Blue Aliens Avatar, not Last Airbender. I don't think anyone cares to defend Blue Aliens Avatar. Tintin is an odd choice of a comparison though.

Nobody needs to defend the Avatar movies. The box office receipts speak for themselves. It's clearly what audiences want. Tin Tin was a movie. It made an excellent $395M at the box office. Avatar was a movie of the same era. It made nearly $3B at the box office. Which movie did audiences prefer? The math says…Avatar by a factor of 7.5 times. Then a sequel came out nearly 15 years later and already has made $2.3B… Clearly audiences want them some Avatar. What's there to defend?

I'm sorry but quality and quantity are not the same thing.

A ticket for Tin Tin cost the same as a ticket for Avatar. They had the same wide release. One was chosen by audiences 7.5 to one. Tin Tin even had the name Stephen Spielberg plastered on it back when that still mattered. It didn't draw even 1/7 the audience of Avatar. You of course can prefer Tin Tin, but the numbers show that Avatar is the superior product. Avatar made nearly 11 times its production budget. Tin Tin made 3 times its production budget. By every objective measure, Avatar is the superior product.

That does not counter what I said. More people watching something is not the same as that thing being better. By your logic, trashy reality TV shows like love island are absolute masterpiece's simply because more people see them.

Can the average member of the public name a single character in the Avatar films? Have some integrity: a film isn't good just because it made a load of money. If you think it's good, defend it on its own merits, if not, criticise it for its shortcomings. Reducing art to it's economic worth is a personal failing that you should be ashamed of.

It's mad that people are saying "popular therefore good" 🤯 It just goes to show how people will say they like something just because those around them do.

Neither Tin Tin nor Avatar are great works of art. They are children's movies with basic plots, simple characters and lots of amazing visuals. We are not discussing whether Avatar is artistically better than Schindlers List. When comparing two "money grab" movies, the movie that grabs the most money is the winner. But also…movie studios are in business to make money. They make some artist movies for their reputation. But the reason they exist at all is to make money. Avatar is exactly what actual movie audiences want in a movie. It's pretty to look at and easy to digest. How do I know it's what they want? Box office. Everything Everwhere All at Once was "Picture of the Year." It did $133M at the box office. Avatar 2 did $2.3B. Your definition of "merit" clearly isn't the same as the average movie ticket buyer's definition.

I strongly disagree since Avatar is my favorite film.

What is it about it that makes it your favourite film? Like what element puts it above, say, your second favourite?

I'm not sure. The visuals are absolutely incredible and I love how immersive it feels. The world building is absolutely gorgeous, the creatures are beautifully designed and I love the plot. I also think the commitment and effort put into it is admirable. It always makes me laugh when people say the visuals aren't that good. It came out at the same time as the original star wars. Compare the visuals and CGI and try telling me they're on the same level.

When you speak of Tintin, you mean the Belgian comic books or was there an English/American film adaptation? Because I used to read the books all the time when I was a *petit garçon*, and I think they're great, but it seems an odd choice to compare films to a series of comic books written in French…

This definitely belongs here
