You still do on most long (intercontinental) flights. I think it's legally required if the flight is long enough

I used to fly trans-Atlantic frequently in the 1990s and it was awesome. You got a meal and could drink 11 free beers. Price of tickets from NYC to Europe or West Africa are the same now as they were in the 1990s.
