+171 Name-brand clothes and accessories are not worth the hype, amirite?

by Anonymous 10 months ago

I dunno. Compare an Arc'Teryx hardshell jacket to the equivalent REI house brand. There's a pretty big difference in fit and function.

Luxury designer isn't the same as name brand as there is a lot of name brands that do produce quality clothing/good value. One could argue a pair of $700+ viberg boots is worth the price as they will last 20+ years but one can get the similar quality out of a pair of a $300-400 pair of redwings/grant stone If one is going to buying a quality pair of boots they will be spending $300+ regardless of the brand though. Expensive doesn't always mean quality but *buy nice or buy twice* holds true for a lot of things.

Completely agreed with "buy nice or buy twice", which is something I've said for years! For the most part, you get what you pay for, and spending less money on a cheap, lower quality item that needs to be replaced more often usually saves no more money than spending more on the better item in the first place and needing to replace it less often. Of course, good quality can sometimes be found for less (especially secondhand) and high prices don't always guarantee quality/longevity, but it's a good general rule of thumb.

generic sunglasses probably won't be as good as brand name when it comes to lenses. you really should be wearing UV protecting sunglasses and cheap ones usually don't do that so well. though they don't have to be the insanely expensive ones either.

I didn't think there would be a difference in sunglasses until I got a more expensive (~$100) pair. Luckily I've kept up with the one pair for 5 years now, and have definitely saved money compared to buying several cheap ones because I would lose or break them.

> What makes Louis Vuitton purses better than some other generic leather purse? The latter is just as durable and will probably be large enough to fit all the woman's items. This is not necessarily true. There is a big gap between LV and a generic bag. The quality of the leather and construction is one thing. One is still going to have to pay around $400-600 for a quality leather purse that is on par with construction. Sure LV quality is not worth $2000+ but there is a huge gap between a $70 purse and let's say a handmade $400 Horween leather purse with quality craftsmanship.

I buy a lot of discount cloths. They work.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

Yes, but you also have to buy a lot of them.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

Yeah. But some name brands are consistent quality and value. Levi jeans have been great for as long as I I've had legs. Carhartt has always been warm and durable. I know what i'm buying will last. My target jeans would lose their crotch in a few months.

You're thinking of it from a strictly functional perspective which completely misses the point of "high fashion" which is understandable if fashion's not a thing for you but most brands like those have built reputations to backup the price tagsā€¦sometimes. I also agree that the whole things silly and who cares but it is what it is

> What makes Louis Vuitton better than some other generic leather purse? People buy it as a status symbol. That's the main appeal.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

As a Chinese, prestige and status is everything. Quality isnt relevant when it comes to clothes and accessories. This is arguably even more important for me as a guy, because being able to buy my gf LV bags while other guys have to settle for less named brands gives me immense satisfaction.

I dont know how unpopular this is. Most people I know make fun of those people wasting their money for items that look worse than cheaper options

by Anonymous 10 months ago

TBH i've seen mostly men interested in brand clothes. Women mostly shop for the look not the brands.

I like Hollister's quality in their clothes and the sleeves are actually long enough for my orangoutang arms.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

It's more of a social status thing. I've found myself gravitating more and more away from Nike and Adidas to brands like DSG. It's like 50% of the cost at most and I get the same usage out of them

by Anonymous 10 months ago

It's the luxury brands that set the trends. They do things first, then the cheaper brands pick it up and repeat. Also, they are status symbols. Oftentimes flashy and in bad taste but you get to show everyone you got the $$. That being said, I would much rather buy an artisan bag from a small workshop than pay for something with a desirable logo, especially because the craftsmanship on luxury brands leather goods is often questionable at best.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

True, a lot of namebrands and stuff are all produced in the same factory. Like Ray ban, coach etc. Sunglasses are all produced by Luxottica in China.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

This isn't unpopular. It's something you realize as you get older.

Sometimes. The only thing I'm really finicky about are my shoes and my sweaters. I want my sweaters to be warm and last forever, and I'm sorry but Puma makes the best running/working shoes in the industry and I've almost got my whole workforce wearing them and not turning back because of their anti-slip properties and comfort. Some brand names are actually worth spending the money on. I won't buy a purse for over 10 bucks, but when it comes to my work shoes I'm ready to shell out for some big bad Puma beauties.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

Literally cause of the name and if you don't understand that idk what else will change ur mind. It's the brand. Simple as that.

by Anonymous 10 months ago

It depends entirely on what the items are and their intended use. At a certain price threshold things definitely take a nose dive in quality. And a lot of the times, you're paying more for the fit and finish vs the materials themselves. For example you could take two pairs of jeans, one might be 50 bucks and the other 100 plus. The denim could be from the same source, but at the higher price you may get extra stitching in high stress areas, better quality stitching and hardware that is less likely to fail, more exacting fit that has less variance between pairs in sizing, a full grain leather patch vs a paper patch, etc.

Some things yes, some things no. I will always buy designer jeans, bags, and sunglasses. I've found that if you spend a little more money on these things up front, it will pay off in the long run because they last so much longer. Shoes are mixed because I will spend more on a classic, quality shoe that I'll wear for years, but I'm not willing to spend more than about $30 on a super trendy style. I definitely spend less money on everything else like shirts and dresses.
