+153 Could of, should of, would of are alright and people shouldn't be shamed for using them, amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Could *have*, should *have*, and would *have*. Not of.

It's not correct and people should know the correct spelling and grammar for professional projects and communication. However, people learn through hearing others. Spelling phonetically shouldn't be mocked like it is, especially if the person is from a known educational desert or don't speak English as a first language.

# Could' *ve* # Should' *ve* # Would' *ve* The "ve" comes from "have", not "of"

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I hope this is unpopular. Why wouldn't anyone want to spell something properly?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

>Saying would of should of could of has a better ring to it then could have should have would have. What most people are actually saying is should've and could've. You're just writing it wrong.

It's almost like languages evolve or something.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

This isn't an evolution though. Most people are saying could've, not could of.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That might be true now, but maybe future English speakers will say "-of" instead of "-‘ve" on purpose. I'm sure a better person might be able to name examples of this kind of thing happening.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Sure, and maybe in the future they will call hats gloves and gloves shoes, but that's not correct right now.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

But the glove hat shoe thing is way off in the future, if it ever happens. People are mixing up the "‘ve " suffix and "of" *right now.*

by Anonymous 1 year ago

gloves are just hats for your arms, or are they socks?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

better than, not "then" wasn't no?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I hear your point but they are homophones anyway... in spoken language we discriminate by context. I dare suggest the same is possible in written word.

Coulda, Woulda, and Shoulda are undefeated.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You hear it wrong maybe. You're hearing the ve part of could've, etc. It sounds like of but isnt
