+147 The holders of medical degrees should not be entitled to the use of the title of 'doctor'. amirite?

You realize that M.D. means medical doctor, right? The name is literally in the degree

by Anonymous 1 year ago

i do! i also know they've only been called that for about two or three centuries, and they already have a perfectly good title in 'physician'. the actual requirements to get a MD are lower than getting a PhD, it's comparable to being a lawyer. Some law schools also give out the degree of Juris Doctor (JD), but even then, we don't call them doctors because they aren't actual doctors.

> the actual requirements to get a MD are lower than getting a PhD Imagine unironically thinking this.

i mean, it's true, it's the equivalent of a master's degree.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Equivalent by what measure? Your opinion? A Master's degree is typically 2-years. Medical school is 4-years plus 2-6 or more years of residency before becoming a fully-independent physician.

As someone who is getting a PhD I promise you medical school is not only more time, more work, and more debt, but the requirements for acceptance ARE much harder especially when it comes to residency.

The point is that the term doctor was originally used for people with a PhD. At some point in history it was co-opted for medical degrees and the medical profession.

It's not easy to become an MD. DO's are a different story though those schools are filled with MD school drop outs and pseudoscience they should lose the title of Dr.

What if they are DOCTORS?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

chiropractors in a nutshell. they aren't doctors. they're harmful.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

okay yes, chiropractors are awful, but physicians aren't real doctors either. none of them actually have PhDs.

Having a doctorate degree means you go to school for 8+ years.
