+162 Driving tests should be taken as a group, amirite?

I'm confused, how do you take driving tests? It sounds like you don't do it on the roads?

You go out with an examiner. They tell you where to go and check some technical things like 3-point turns or parallel parking. But while you obviously need to drive safely you're still doing it as an individual, learning to operate your car. You can pass a test and still not really have an appreciation for how a group of cars actually operates in traffic.

Yeah but where out? Don't you go out into normal streets where there's traffic?

Yes, but again you're still just driving as an individual. You also (in the UK) tend to do it on more urban roads with maybe a small stretch of dual carriageway. You don't get to test proper long distance driving etiquette.

Maybe you love in the middle of nowhere. To pass your driving test in London you definitely have to be considerate of other road users to pas your test. Something like driving too much under the speed limit and causing other drivers to overtake unsafely results in a fail.

Isn't that the whole point of driving lessons. To teach you the rules and how to drive on the road.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

In theory yes, but a lot of instructors (especially accelerated ones) focus more on the technical and legal stuff and not so much the ‘unwritten' rules and tips that can benefit everyone.

Do you have your driving test on an empty race track?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

No, but it's very easy to pass a driving test without learning how to cooperate with other drivers effectively. Especially as generally instructors and examiners try and avoid super heavy traffic which is when things get more stressful.

It's not, unless you go to private roads, which I don't think happens in any of the western countries. You just drive on public roads, where everyone drives, it's not just you. Have you ever been on a road?

Here in the UK, I'm pretty sure theory tests are taken in groups. I'm not sure about the actual driving test, though.

Oh that's interesting. That wasn't the case for me, but then that was a mere 18 years ago.

You pretty much already do. At least you have to, to pass your driving test in the UK. You have to make safe decisions which affect other road users as little as possible.

>Can you sit in traffic without feeling the need to change lanes every 30 secs, slowing everyone up? just be glad i do it safely. my car has a good takeoff speed and i will use it to my advantage

by Anonymous 1 year ago

also if you're in the car with me and you don't want me to do it just ask and i'll respect your wishes

Don't think this would fix anything. Most of the things u listed are common sense, most people nowadays are just stupid that's all.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

So why not give them one chance to know the drivers around them and have a shared interest in working together before they are let loose.

I mean the test already teaches u the basics on being a defensive driver so I still think it just depends on the person. If someone has bad traits then I feel like those traits just spill over when they become drivers. It's ultimately up to them if they wanna change or not.

In other words, you're going to test for **'self-absorbed' humans**, and deny those people a license to operate a motor vehicle? This should be an interesting show to watch!

I'm sorry - where do you live that your driving test is done in a bubble? We already take our driving tests on active roadways. You encounter slow drivers, you have to merge, you have to drive *in traffic* because that is what you are being tested for!
