Knowing Geography doesn't make you smart, amirite?
by Anonymous1 year ago
i don't think people need to be able locate djibouti on a map, but they should 100% know that paris isn't a country or that spain is in europe. it's baffling meeting people thinking spain is near or even **in** mexico…
wouldn't say it makes someone inherently *stupid*, but i agree with another reply that it shows your lack of interest in anything outside of the US

>djibouti
I have never actually seen that written out before. I love saying it though.

> "...or that Spain is in Europe"
*flashbacks to being asked why I'm gunning down Mexicans in Resident Evil 4*
Though to be fair, the person who asked that was Mexican, and pointed out that they asked because the "Spaniards" I was fighting were all speaking Mexican Spanish, not Castillian Spanish.

The same could be said about knowing that the Earth is round. It's not something you need to know for your day-to-day life.
Something that you think is 'being nerdy' is just common knowledge for others

It isn't about being *smart* but it says something about a person's lack of interaction with the wider world I think. If they haven't read a lot, don't know history, haven't read about anything outside their local sphere of being it tends to point to a lack of intelligence. Especially people who think things like Africa is a country, or France is in Asia or something. How can you even exist on this planet and not come across basic facts like this? Even just in passing somewhere?

Intelligence and memory aren't the same thing. Smart I'd associate with intelligence, whereas those questions are about memory, so I agree with you.

Smart no, knowledgeable yes. Ignorance is not a good look.

To me, it seems those questions are less about determining whether someone is smart or not, and more about how poorly educated they are. In most of the videos I've seen, it's Americans who are being quizzed, and the point seems to be to demonstrate that American education is so insular that people know very little about anywhere outside the U.S.
Maybe I'm misreading that?
Unfortunately, many people equate ignorance with stupidity.

Let me guess, you are American.....So, tell me where Iraq is.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I used to draw maps and create alt history scenarios as a hobby, ik where iraq is
by Anonymous1 year ago
But it does make you dumb when you don't know anything.
Yes I'm talking to you Americans
by Anonymous1 year ago
It makes you cool 😎

Making fun of people for being dumb is just mean.
Making fun of people for being ignorant can be funny. Always love videos where people try to act like experts on complex geopolitical issues, yet when asked where they are on a map cannot answer.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Correct. Knowing geography makes you *educated*, and intelligence is not required for education.
