I hate it because it never affects the stuff I want to buy

It's just for promotional purposes and to get people to sign on.
The stuff you need never goes on sale. The total on my usual Whole Foods grocery order would be the same or more if I placed an order today. If it was 20% less that would be a true prime day.

I don't see any advertisement anywhere except on the Amazon itself. I suggest you check your browsing algorithm.

People are like herd animals when it comes to shopping. Look at Black Friday and Cyber Monday. It's really really dumb.

It's a sale, just like every other retailer has. Some of the deals are good, some you can find cheaper other places. It's the same marketing all businesses use.
