So you feel that a university is irresponsible over the image of a mascot and some hedges? Seriously? It's just a mascot. As for the hedges I feel that would be on someone else for that.

There are individuals who want a bulldog just because of UGA. I work at a plant nursery, and the amount of individuals that want the same hedge as the university is more than I'd expect. An image should represent something healthy. I'm not sure on how knowledgeable you are pertaining to ecosystems and invasive species, but privet should not be planted under any circumstances. It's deeper than just a dog or some hedges.

There are people who want a tiger or a bear because they see others with them. It's just an image to identify a team, much like the Gamecocks, the Celtics, the Timberwolves, the Spartans, and the Cowboys. How one feels about such an image is more on the individual than the team. And considering how it's not inherently offensive, I see nothing wrong with the image. I understand how problematic an invasive species can be, but blaming a university as a whole for it seems pointless. Plus you have to understand that some of those who want that hedge may not even know what it is, so it would be good to teach them about it and spread awareness about the hedges instead of just blaming the university.

What do you think about the University of South Carolina's mascot - a fighting chicken, a mascot born from an illegal trade based in animal cruelty?

This image is supported, someone somewhere may decide that it's okay to fight chickens because we love the idea so much. Associations that create a physical habit like this may do more harm than we expect. This is different than outreach programs explaining the dangers and issues that arise from these behaviors. Slapping an image on a hat and supporting it with money creates a problem, in my opinion.
