With very few exceptions, I don't care for crowd work on specials or on taped performances. Live, however, I think it can definitely work, especially if the comic is quicker on their feet than most comics. It's definitely a skill that while it needs to be in a comic's repertoire, very few excel at it.

Crowd work is good for getting an audience engaged if you are bombing. If you are bombing…don't make that night into your special. Specials are supposed to be all of your recent material that worked. If it didn't work…leave it out. If you are doing crowd work during your special, you don't have enough material that works to be doing a special.

Funny take. I can see why people don't like it. If you have Tiktok, search for Stavros's channel. His crowd work clips make me laugh sometimes really hard. I view it as like a funny guy at a BBQ who just turns things into humor out of no where.
