Basic Advertisement has destroyed the human spirit. amirite?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Not sure when exactly this "human spirit" existed. People have always been interested in portraying/projecting a certain image based on input from outside sources, whether it was the church or other cultural institutions. I agree that advertising is awful in its impacts, I just think it replaced a long series of things that played the same roll and feeling insecure that your khakis aren't the right cut is less bad than being insecure that your family isn't viewed as pious enough such that your daughter won't be able to marry and you'll be shunned during a long winter.

I didn't think of it like that, maybe it's never truly exsisted. There is always some societal pressure to try and conform to, I wonder if will always be that way?

marketing and insurance are two forces that are collectively controlling

I agree that advertisements have played on people's fears and insecurities throughout history, but it's important to recognize that societal pressures to conform have always existed in various forms. While advertising may have intensified these pressures, it's not the sole cause of the issue.

My second major was in business and going through the courses was eye opening. I had a class where the professor was explaining how multinational companies influence governments around the world and the professor concluded by saying this is actually a good thing. She even used the example of United Fruit Co. "lobbying the Honduras government" to keep fruit prices low.

You may have picked the wrong major.

There is a way to advertise that doesn't prey on peoples insecurities and it actually provides them with value.

What's the product?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Social entrepreneurship aims to market products that solve problems of society. One such product was a bike that had a water tank and filtration system on it and when it is peddled it converts the water to clean drinking water. This was sold in Africa to local governments and has helped local people massively.
However the future of advertising is in the future of business, services. A service I am setting up helps people with disabilities to engage in activities and meet people. There is good money in helping others.

As much as I love the idea of profiting off Africans and the disabled, I'm wondering who would be paying you to help the disabled engage in activities and meet people? Is that charity work?

marketing and insurance are two forces that are collectively controlling the human spirit and making the world worse every year.

I agree, I am sure if these advertisements didn't exist nobody would wash or use deodorant, it's just these companies holding people hostage with fear 100%

If you ask me we are better off without this "human spirit"

My Mom planned out and painted a small town with an asphalt on our concrete floors. Beyond the clouds grew into a dreamscape.

I'd say less advertisement and more living in a culture where most people don't create anything.

Nothings really changed. Most people have always been stupid, superficial and materialistic. If those things weren't already baked into human nature the advertising wouldn't be effective.

I'm shocked anyone can finish a marketing degree without feeling like the absolute scum of the earth. The single marketing class I took made me feel disgusting. Absolute leeches on society.

You forgot to add women shaving to your list and the pocket conspiracy.
