Do you know anything about animals at all? Because it doesn't seem like you do.

We're genetically disposed to like high calorie high fat. People who have nutrient deficiencies often have "strange" cravings. Look at people with pica

Tell me you've never had a dog without telling me you've never had a dog.

If you give lab rats high sugar and fat foods and no way to burn the calories in an enclosed place, alone, then they'll also grow obese and have complications. I remember reading about this study somewhere.

Stuff that is more calorically dense usually tastes better.

Horses and sugar cubes.

as far as I know no other animal has nutritional label so that could very well be part of it considering they don't know whether or not they are eating a nutritious thing or not

This is not true. Animals in the wild often don't have many tasty treats, so they get meat, or plants, or salt from a rock. Maybe some berries/nuts. When given the option, though, they will always go for the tasty stuff. Source: owner of many pets

Animals often prioritize nutrients because they rarely have a choice in when it comes to their diet. Also I used to have guinea pig, and trust me- they have food preferences. I had one who used to lick the plate clean from eating a small piece of watermelon, while the other one I had, didn't like it. So if given the chance, I am pretty sure any animal would choose the most tasty food.

My dog eats my cat's poops. I don't know what cat poops taste like or how nutritious they are, so I don't know if this supports or detracts from your theory. But it's a fun fact.

Apparently it tastes sweet to dogs due to their food.

ok so maybe humans are ONE OF the only species that prefer taste over nutrients

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Maybe for wild animals but I don't think it applies to domesticated or zoo animals

You haven't met my dog.

My dog would like a word with you.

We're the only species that's figured out refined sugar. Also, there are little tree shrews that love to get hammered. Pretty sure that's not about nutrition.

My dog loves potato chips. She would pass over just about any other food for them.

Reminds me of that comic where the guy is asking the bull why only humans drink milk and the bull turns to a cow, asks if he can drink some milk, and gets told off. Not a lotta opportunity for wild animals to be selective, ya know? But in numerous examples already listed and many others, animals will prefer tastier foods over blander, more nutritious food.

My dog always insists on reading the ingredients and nutritional labeling before consuming his dog food.

Are you kidding? Animals care about nothing but the taste of their food, they have zero concept of 'nutrients' that's idiotic.
