If you're pretending to pretend. Are you pretending?

Eh? Surely most pretending is exactly that: pretending to not pretend. If I dress up as a police office and arrest someone on the street and they say: "how do I know you're not pretending to be police?" - I can carry on the pretence (ie pretend to not pretend): "I'm serious - call the station and ask them!" Can you pretend to pretend? That seems more elaborate. I suppose a real police officer could go up to a suspect and whisper: "I'm an actor being secretly filmed for a prank, just go with it and pretend to the people around you that I'm arresting you..." It might fool them!
