It is binding, on a relationship level, just not on a legal one. And comparing the two like they exist in comparable setting is surely well meaning, but misplaced.

Well legal contracts sometimes have to be forged to let the two parties have a sense of leverage, even if you think it erodes trust. It's sort of a necessity.
