Yea but "oblate spheroid" doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

Circles are flat. I believe you meant to say sphere. Also, if the Earth where shrunk to the size of a ping pong ball, it would be smoother and more uniform than the ping pong ball.

I was told it's more like pear shaped.

Barely and imperceptibly. It said to be an oblate spheroid because it's wider near the middle than around the poles, and called pear-shaped because the widest part is not the equator but slightly below it due to surface bulges. Having said that, the deviation from near-perfect roundness is so slight that can't really be seen with the naked eye.

The earth is a cat that is playing with Australia

It's also not a perfect sphere. The Earth bulges at the Equator from its spin.
