Eating dinner with your family is way better while watching TV. amirite?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Once a week, like having dinner during family movie night? Sure.
Every day? That's too much. Kids are exposed to enough screens as it is, dinner time is a great opportunity to be away from them. Plus, it's way easier to eat at the table and I don't want my couch to get dirty.

Are you my father? But I agree, when I have a family n marriage n whatnot, I'd like the non screen time

Imo it also depends on your family. If I had abusive parents I wouldn't want to eat with them

Your take doesnt have to make those studies untrue, though. Like ok with tv isnt really bad but without tv is better. It doesnt necessarilly mean your way is wrong.

I could not agree more, OP!

>Our dinner time is a time to wind down, relax, and enjoy each others companies without the added pressure to engage in forced conversation.
It's quite strange that you feel there's pressure for forced conversation if you were to just sit at a table. Why does it make you feel that way? There shouldn't be any pressure to do that.

To me it's not that it's important to talk during dinner, it's that there is time to talk without distractions of other things. If you do so after eating instead I don't see that as a problem. As long as the kids know how to behave properly and patiently at a table when they need to.

I think some of the best bonding experiences with my family was eating dinner while watching a show or TV show. It's probably why I'm such a film fanatic now.
But its also probably the reason I cannot eat without watching YouTube or a movie.
But yeah I agree, I think it's great

I basically never watch tv now that I have a kid. I miss eating on the couch.

I am so sleepy I just read couch as "cooch" and was hella confused for a good minute

I think you're ignoring half of the conversation; it's not saying the words , it's bonding with the follow up conversation.Yeah, I get a school-aged kids life isn't that exciting for you, but it's the most important thing they've done so far. Allowing it to sit as "same old same old" is lazy and deconstructive.
Instead you're relying on a crutch of exterior entertainment, and in 20 years you're going to wonder why your kids don't talk to you. It's because they never had to, you "bonded" over being silent, watching a screen. Ask me how I know.

How is it unpopular?

Sometimes i watch tv while eating, and sometimes with family. When parents were out I'll eat alone

We preferred radio murder mystery shows. A local station would have them on Sunday and other stories during the week.

Eating food while watching TV is better when alone. So noone can hear you talking with it.

Me and my husband used to eat sat in front of the TV. It's not practical now with a nearly 1 year old (and we don't have the telly on when she's awake). The odd times we have since - maybe I'm getting old but I can't get comfortable and digest my food properly any more! I wonder if it will change back when she gets older, but I think we'll probably stick with the table for a long time.

No screens at the dinner table in our house. IPads/Phones go up on the counter.
Sometimes we'll allow screens at the table for breakfast (mostly cereal).
However, pizza night, apps night, we sit on the couch and watch TV together and smash.
But if mom and dad cook a nice meal with a protein, veg and a carb where everyone is sitting down at the tableā¦No screens.

We eat basically in front of the tv because my house is designed weird that I cant put a dining room table in it. so the kids eat at this counter thing we have and the adults eat on the couch. basically in the same room. but we watch one episode of something together and then generally talk about it after. We all sort of miss being able to have regular family dinners together though. Maybe when I can eventually afford to buy something else. But I agree, we still have plenty of other time together where we can talk, its not a big deal to eat at a table together.
