That being said, dbag cyclists stand out because they're more rare than the ones riding as they should
by Anonymous1 year ago
Many places don't have a proper space for cycling, so you're forced to choose between the road or sidewalk.
by Anonymous1 year ago
The road is a proper place for cycling. It's for all vehicles
by Anonymous1 year ago
Oh yeah, inhaling toxic fumes from 6 lane for an hour hoping nobody so much as slightly bumps into me otherwise I'm likely ending in a hospital, sounds like a dream
by Anonymous1 year ago
Not all of us only have a 6 lane to choose as our route. What you've described would be a motorway where I live and not for bikes, but we have alternative roads to use instead. They're generally more direct than motorways, which go a longer way around but are faster for cars because they can do high speeds. The direct roads have lower speed limits and everyone can use them.
by Anonymous1 year ago
This isn't addressing my point. Even if it would be 2 lane with 50km/h speed limit, you're still dealing with asshole drivers who endanger you and you usually get stuck sniffing the fumes of car before you on each pedestrian crossing and crossroad you come upon, which will happen even more so in your suggestion.
by Anonymous1 year ago
That doesn't mean the road isn't the proper place for cycling. That just means you've got arsehole drivers.
As for the fumes, every time you're stuck in traffic on a car or walking alongside a road you're inhaling those fumes
by Anonymous1 year ago
Only if you're suicidal where I live
by Anonymous1 year ago
It's because most towns do not have bike lanes, and therefore
by Anonymous1 year ago
ya i think it's an EGO thing, some cyclists have an EGO the size of a truck, but the trucks don't care.
by Anonymous1 year ago
How can you cycle without becoming a cyclist?
by Anonymous1 year ago
I only hate cyclists that cycle erratically, or cycle in the middle of the road instead of the bike lane. Unfortunately those two categories are the majority of cyclists.
by Anonymous1 year ago
When there is no place for you to overtake le safely, you better bet i will go in the middle of the road cause car tend to overtake you even if it it's not safe , plus people open there car's door whiteout looking soo
by Anonymous1 year ago
Absolutely, then there's the "shared" cycle lanes that have pedestrians wandering about with headphones in - not safe at 15+ mph. Then there's the ones covered in leaves and broken drains.
I'll be on the road where it's safer.
by Anonymous1 year ago
It's a tiny minority that are bad though
by Anonymous1 year ago
If I had safe places to ride my bike on the road, I would. Also everything is too far away, or up gigantic hills.
by Anonymous1 year ago
> Riding your bike to work instead of driving is not only better for yourself but also the environment
And for other drivers too.
More bikes = less cars = less traffic congestion.
by Anonymous1 year ago
That equation only works in areas with reasonable bike infrastructure. Otherwise, cyclists only make traffic worse by going 10 in a 40 zone where it's impossible to pass them.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Well maybe car drivers shouldn't oppose better bike infrastructure as much as they typically do.
by Anonymous1 year ago
and? they dont teach in drivers ed how to pass someone in front of you anymore?
by Anonymous1 year ago
In traffic, on a two-way road, with the cyclist right in the middle of the lane (like they always are)?
Even when you're safe to pass, the cyclist gets angry and flips you off at least half the time.
by Anonymous1 year ago
When I hate on cyclists, I'm not talking about people who use it as their primary means of transportation. Those people are usually very aware and considerate. The area around my college campus had a lot of them. The cyclists I hate are the ones who do it as a hobby and also drive a car, probably a luxury SUV. They have goofy outfits, the super thin tires, those fluorescent sunglasses, mini backpacks, and if you're really unlucky, you'll run into a whole ass fleet of those mfs riding together. They don't always fit those criteria, but more often than not, the entitled cyclists who don't follow traffic laws look like that.
by Anonymous1 year ago
People who use it as a means of transportation often have those super thin tires. That's a road/street bike, which are super light and often have Kevlar or super sturdy tires for the road which allow you to travel at traffic speeds :)
by Anonymous1 year ago
Oh I'm not hating on the tires at all, I just think the complete package makes those people look like dorks
by Anonymous1 year ago
Yeah, we commuters don't like the "whole suit" people that much either. I just had to stick up for the bikes themselves.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I'm aware it's great for the environment but also really great for the person. I'm kinda jealous from that aspect as I'd be much healthier.
But it's hard to praise in the moment when I'm late for work, I'm needing to drive along a 60mph road and can't get past a cyclist. Despite them doing nothing wrong, they're the cause of me slowing down and I wish they weren't on the road.
That said, it's incredible sometimes the manoeuvres I see cyclists pull off. Flying through red lights, switching lanes or just swerving out into the road without warning. I'd say they're more likely to do that than drivers. A lack of registration, licencing and **legal** repercussions are to blame for that. I've seen people just swerve in front of me without looking over their shoulder or signalling.
by Anonymous1 year ago
You need to get the idea that a cyclist on the road is gonna make you more or less late lmao.
Unless you're going felony level speeds, you are not making it on time. I've tested this plenty of times. The margin difference is 1 minute. (Work is typically 15-20 minutes away with average traffic)
If it's not a cyclist, it's gonna be some slow ass driver, construction, or any other interference.
The best thing you can do is not be late in the first place.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I'd rather be behind a slow ass driver than a speedy cyclist.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Doesn't matter.
Like I said, if it's not a cyclist, it'll be construction, traffic, or any other traffic interference. If you're late it's on you. No amount of speeding will change that.
Also, you can *legally* pass a cyclist when there's an opening, you can't pass a slow driver.
by Anonymous1 year ago
>Like I said, if it's not a cyclist, it'll be construction, traffic, or any other traffic interference. If you're late it's on you. No amount of speeding will change that.
Well just because other annoying things exist doesn't mean one annoying thing isn't annoying. Also, I don't want to be more late than I am or perhaps I might be able to make it if I'm quick but a cyclist will hold me up.
>Also, you can legally pass a cyclist when there's an opening, you can't pass a slow driver.
Where do you live that you can't overtake a car safely and legally?
by Anonymous1 year ago
You should leave earlier, it's not the cyclist fault you're bad at time management.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Is the cyclist the reason, or the lack of good bike infrastructure? The cyclist probably would rather use a bike path instead if there was a good one to use.
by Anonymous1 year ago
So, you are going to get annoyed at the cyclist for YOU being late to work instead of being annoyed at yourself for not leaving earlier? Don't get made and annoyed with them for your poor time management.
by Anonymous1 year ago
First, being late doesn't mean you are at fault. Any number of circumstances can make you late. In this case, I'll make another earlier cyclist.
Second, anything slowing you down when you are in a rush can be annoying, regardless of fault. And yes if you are late through your own actions you can also be annoyed at yourself, doesn't make the cyclist any less annoying for going 40 under the limit making you annoyed there's a cyclist too.
Third. Being late was an example, something showing you down by such a large amount can be annoying when you aren't in a rush.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I love cycling. It's why I've been in good shape most of my life.
I live in a place where I can safely cycle away from cars. If I had to bike on roads and worry at all moments about being killed, I'd never enjoy biking.
Where I live I can go on a bike ride for hours without ever having to deal with a car. If I want to cross a road I just slow down and wait for the vehicle to pass the crosswalk.
by Anonymous1 year ago
We gotta get more people to watch that movie Premium Rush
by Anonymous1 year ago
I hate the ones that ignore the rules of the road or are totally oblivious to the traffic backup they are creating during rush hour. This would be a small percentage of cyclists and unfortunately, they are the ones that ruin it for the rest because people assume 10% of bad cyclists = 100% of all cyclists.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Most people in the US are fat and lazy, and haven't gotten their oversized asses on a bike in decades, if they even ever learned how to ride to begin with. These are the same people that take 15 minutes to find a parking spot closer to the store while there are tons of open spaces in the back.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Where I live, there are (proportionally) more bad cyclists than bad drivers. They don't use their lanes, they run red lights, they don't look when turning (nor dobthey signal their intent). When there's construction, they'll sometimes have a lane dedicated to them, but they still don't use it and go between cars. When they'll start respecting traffic rules, then we can talk about praise.
by Anonymous1 year ago
absolutely, it's shortsighted ignorance that gets mad at cyclists
by Anonymous1 year ago
why would i ride a bike to work?
by Anonymous1 year ago
We don't know, we don't know what your commute is like.
But if your commute was a reasonable distance with a bike lane that covered most of it, biking to work could have some advantages.
by Anonymous1 year ago
it would if i could be without ac but i can't
by Anonymous1 year ago
Its cheaper, faster and better for your health
I don't do it only because I sweat like a horse and I can't work sweaty
by Anonymous1 year ago
My office is 20 miles away, Tour de France cyclists couldn't make the commute faster than I can in my car.
by Anonymous1 year ago
My office is in the center of the city, which has very small roads
The traffic alone is enough that I can walk faster than people can pass a couple of streets
by Anonymous1 year ago
how is it faster?
by Anonymous1 year ago
If you live in a reasonably dense city, sidestepping traffic jams can be a massive advantage
by Anonymous1 year ago
If you live in a city, it often is. I refuse to live more than 5 miles from any job I work at due to time loss, so bicycling is often a faster alternative.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I disagree. I grew up in the city, had my first few jobs in the city; the biking infrastructure just wasn't there and there's no way I could beat a car driving from my house to my office by bike. I'd be sharing the same roads but moving half as fast if that.
by Anonymous1 year ago
i think they're probably talking about actual cities, where traffic barely moves and cyclists can filter through it
by Anonymous1 year ago
praised? that's a bit much. It's great if you can do it but who cares if you don't
by Anonymous1 year ago
I praise the desire to better yourself, save the planet and save money. But way too many bad cyclists
by Anonymous1 year ago
Anti-cyclists are like homophobes. The only reason they dislike them is because they secretly envy them but for whatever reason are reluctant to try it.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I would venture to guess that most people have tried riding a bike
by Anonymous1 year ago
Most people dislike cyclist because cyclists don't care about their surroundings and other people, while driving.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I mean they act just like driver in that sense.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Because they ignore traffic rules and act like douchbags
by Anonymous1 year ago
So, do cars.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Cuz in downtown Toronto, theres enough of them that don't wear a helmet that makes me question whether they understand the basic human biology
by Anonymous1 year ago
Maybe if cyclists actually obeyed traffic laws occasionally, everybody wouldn't hate you
by Anonymous1 year ago
They will obey traffic laws when cars start to.
by Anonymous1 year ago
It's a very very bad idea to bike anywhere with car traffic. It's just a matter of time before an accident happens, and it's pretty much the same as a motorcycle. There's no minor accidents.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Millions of people bike on the roads without accidents.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I didn't say that everyone gets into an accident every time they ride a bike.
I'm saying if you bike around car traffic regularly, eventually you will get hit by a car.
The concept is that even though there's a small probability of something happening, over many repeats of that probability it becomes almost inevitable that it will happen at least once.
Understand ?
by Anonymous1 year ago
That's not how probability works until you get into tens or hundreds of thousands or more depending on what it is.
That's gambler's fallacy in the short term; its like looking at a roulette wheel ending up black 100 times and assuming red has a bigger chance of coming next (no, it doesnt). Most commuter bikers have never been hit by a car.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Cyclists in the abstract are great. In practice because most roads aren't equipped to let cyclists and cars share them safely the create frustrating and dangerous situations.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I don't understand why all cyclist are hated so much
**they aren't**
*glad I could clear that up for you*
by Anonymous1 year ago
I disagree. Every bike rider I see is conveniently in the middle of the lane. You can't do anything about it because if you hit them you go to jail. They take advantage of the fact that no one in a car can do anything about it. Almost immunity. Also it causes traffic congestion because you have to swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting them. Exercise is great but bikers need to learn that it's not just them on the road
by Anonymous1 year ago
Cars should also learn it isn't just them on the road either.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Cyclists are hated because they often drive around with complete and utter disregard for traffic laws.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Many drivers are like that but we don't nearly give them as much hate.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Physics overrules everything. I would never ride a bike on a road designed for cars. I won't walk on the shoulder either. Not worth the risk.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think it's because cyclist are usually pretty douchey and think they have priority over cars on the roads.
by Anonymous1 year ago
If cyclists would obey traffic laws and ride in the goddamn bike lanes and not the middle of the road and act like they have a force field around the bike then sure.
I like cycling. Cyclists are almost universally assholes
by Anonymous1 year ago
Because, on the whole, you want to ride in the road, but you don't want to follow traffic laws. You violate those traffic laws, hit, maim, and kill pedestrians, and perpetually act like victims because when you do the same thing to a car, the car wins.
Because no matter how much you like cycling, the vast majority of people do not want to commute by bicycle, and your insistence that everyone else pander to your preferred method means far more popular means that affect far more people are made worse for the benefit of a few (who overwhelmingly are wealthy, white, young, and have shorter commutes).
You generate a disproportionate amount of attention from local governments relative to your actual numbers, and you can't do it in a way that simply advocates for themselves, you have to criticize everyone else who doesn't like your transportation method because you insist it is superior.
Again, *on the whole*. Individuals may be different and YMMV.
by Anonymous1 year ago
>I don't understand why all cyclist are hated so much. Of course you get the odd nut job on a bike who thinks their above the law
I mean, you answered your own pondering right here.
>Riding your bike to work instead of driving is not only better for yourself but also the environment. It also takes hard work and determination to choose riding when there are much easier and quicker options.
No one cares about any of this. They care about bikes that selectively acknowledge laws, and then get mad about cars when they are the ones creating the dangerous situations for themselves. nothing is more annoying as a driver than getting stuck behind a bike that cant break 15 mph on a normal road, who insists on being in the street...only to see them decide to use the sidewalk and crosswalks to get around inconvenient traffic lights. At that point, you're just being an asshole.
>those people are everywhere you look, especially in cars.
No one likes those drivers either.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I dont praise people for doing what they enjoy.
by Anonymous1 year ago
So many people love the Tour de France though and many people love going for bike rides across many countries.
Lots of people love cycling though, so this is a weird opinion.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Why do so many people refuse to acknowledged the very high amount of douchebag cyclists out there?
by Anonymous1 year ago
There a high amount of douchebag driver but we put all the hate on cyclist.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I get pissed when we have dedicated paths that are literally parallel to the actual road, yet they choose to use the road and be in groups of like 20. It's impossible to get an opening to safely pass that big of a group.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Considering how many times I been hit or almost by bikes and scooters on sidewalks. Different vehicles but whatever 😾
Last guy even got argumentative saying I should move when one I'm disabled and 2 I literally signaled him I'm going to the entrance of my apt 😾
by Anonymous1 year ago
Cycling is praised enough--unless we get bike lanes everywhere, *cyclists* will probably never be everyone's favorite hobbyists.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Cyclists aren't hated wtf are you talking about
Cycling to work is a normal thing
by Anonymous1 year ago
These replies say otherwise
by Anonymous1 year ago
Yeah I noticed
It's very confusing to me
I've never met someone in real life who dislikes cyclists
by Anonymous1 year ago
I rode my bike to school when in college, I wish there were nearby jobs that I could ride my bike to now.
