+155 It's easier for a musical performer to be taken seriously as an actor than it is for an actor to be taken seriously as a musical pwrformer, amirite?

Performing music on stage is, in a way, a form of acting. A lot of musicians are actually fairly introverted in real life, so you have to develop a sort of persona to get past the shyness. When I perform I'm definitely playing a character. That character is outgoing, charismatic, tells jokes, smiles, loves interacting with people, is comfortable being the center of attention. As soon as I step off stage I'm hiding in a dark corner hoping nobody wants to talk to me. So I think going in that direction is easier for musicians because most of us have been faking it to some degree for years. But you can't fake being a good musician no matter how good an actor you may be.

This sounds like the premise of Bocchi

Excellent!

There are quite a number of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse actors that contradict this. Could just be a caveat for child actor turned musician...

Donald glover es the exception here.

Because Will Smith is better at acting than Keanu Reeves is at making music.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

And also better at acting than Keanu too.

We call those musicians

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Meh…. Not necessarily.

Jared Leto is a rare exception, but yeah, this is an interesting one

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Yea, Leto was the only exception I could think of.

Jenny Lewis was an actress before her music career took off. Rilo Kiley featured her and "Salute Your Shorts" actor Blake Sennett.

Demi Lovato, Arianna Grande (to an extent), Selena Gomez, Hillary Duff, Miley Cyrus (to an extent). This is pretty much the standard path for child/Nick/Disney actors.

I think there is a perception that acting is easy, or at least that you don't need to be particularly good at it in order to be a bankable movie star, so it seems easier for people to come from other industries and dabble in acting. There is *some* truth to this, but I think a lot of us are also willing to overlook mediocre, or even weak, acting from a famous face if the movie is otherwise delivering the entertainment value we want from it.

Hm that's true, I agree.

If you're a successful musician artist, you've already got an acceptably good "look," stage/camera presence, and are likely able to get along with people in a collaborative setting. These are arguably more important than musical chops, and you have to have those too. That alone usually means you're not going to terrible in a non-demanding role with a good director. And even award-winning royalty like Queen Latifah and Lady Gaga started out with easier roles and learned the job. By contrast, a lot of actors have the stage thing down, and if they're singing, they probably have good tone, but actual pitch recognition and rhythm are a lot harder to develop the older you get. Music skills and language skills are alike that way. So Meryl Streep can sound like she's Polish when she's saying her lines, but it breaks down if she has to have a spontaneous conversation. She can play the violin parts she learned for "Music of My Heart," but she's unlikely to be able to play a fairly simple part one day after getting a recording or sheet music, because one thing is a trick, and the other is a skill.

Dog Star doesn't exactly lean into Keanu's fame. He doesn't sing; he plays bass. He doesn't even stand in the middle of publicity photos.

I didnt realise Will Smith was ever legitimate.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Right? Legit? Was he though?

Never had a copy of "He's the DJ I'm the Rapper"? Damn shame. Charlie Mack is such a fun song.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Im sure he was getting jiggy with it like most rappers. But rappers are genuinely fake. so he'd fit right in. I'll have a listen tho!

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Rappers are genuinely fake? Like Santa? Or the Easter Bunny?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They are. Those Blings and cars and ho's are all rented

by Anonymous 1 year ago

If anything,it's the opposite sometimes.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

And Jared Leto is neither taken too seriously as an actor nor a musician! Everybody wins!
