I think most people (aside from those that do it for resale value) do it to preserve this item they worked for and is on a pedestal to them

My wife collects and she just really doesn't want to ruin them so she's ultra careful about it. I think it comes from growing up poor

I collect my little ponies and it's unboxed all the way. Sure I wouldn't unbox anything vintage but I much prefer to be able to display stuff without boxes
