Paradox games doesn't deserve a pass for their DLC, amirite?
by Anonymous1 year ago
paradox setup like that really discourages people from getting into a game late, your sitting there thinking, ok how many of the 10+ different twenty dollar DLCs do I need to get? etc.

Exactly man. I can't get into Stellaris because of this.

If you want to get on it, put it on a wishlist and wait for a sale. Stellaris often has like 75% off sales going, 2-3 times a year.

I got into EU4 late, but there was a humble bundle that got me something like 8 major DLCs + the base game for $15. If I had paid sticker for them it would have been something like $175.

Thats why I can't get into EU4. I don't want to have to watch something practically the length of a college lecture just to learn how to play the basics of the game, only to learn that to get the full experience I need like, 15 different DLCs.

It's the same with a lot of fighting games and a lot of total war games, they have a sea of endless DLC that nobody really talks about. It's kinda why I look up guides on which DLC to get, most of the time it's just bloat or a skin. I just think people give Paradox a pass because it takes a while for the dlc to build up to an absurd level. Everybody else tends to have those DLCs out on day one or just shortly after release.

That's why I only buy their dlcs when they're heavily marked down on a seasonal sale.

Still rewards and encourages them for the practice. I turn to file sharing for anything EA/Paradox make.

My only experience with Paradox is Cities Skylines and Surviving Mars but you don't need to buy all the DLCs. I didn't buy any DLC for Mars and definitely don't have all the Skylines DLC.

As someone who owns Stellaris and all of the DLC, which totals well over $300 I believe, I agree. Paradox makes some incredible games, many of which count among my favorites, but their business plans leave much to be desired.
They'll release a game, and then in order to increase its lifespan and make more money, they'll string out regular DLCs and expansions over the next decade in order to keep people hooked. They already have the first several expansions and DLCs planned out when they launch the game, they didn't add it solely to get more money in the future.
I love Paradox games, but as a result, if you want the full experience, they're often hundreds of dollars.
