Isolation has always been a common trope. Cut the phones, electricity, car batteries, only bridge out of town, etc.

To take this a step further, increase the isolation factor. That's one of the reasons why movies like The Thing, Descent and Alien are so good is because they are completely isolated. There's nowhere to go. It's more than removing contact with the outside world - it's completely eliminating it.

It's really more of a plot device than anything else. In order for the story to work people must be unable to contact anyone.
