+154 Daily living has become so sedentary for so many people that we had to create gyms to purposely remake it physically hard on ourselves, amirite?

It's not just about the sedentary part, it's also the plentiful food and the ability to profit on the exploitation of natural desire for fats, salts, and sugars.

Mostly sugars, animal fat and salt aren't bad for you if you're active. The human brain just goes crazy for sugar since it was so rare before industrialization or even agriculture really

Just wait until OP hears about camping...

That's good lol. Now we gotta go deliberately suffer the wilderness to reconnect with nature...

Gyms are better than most activity you can do outside.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

And they also predate sedentary lifestyles.

Gyms were a luxury of the wealthy upper class when they first came about. So yes, they predate sedentary lifestyles, but only sedentary lifestyles for more common folk.

That seems silly when all you really need is a collection of heavy rocks.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Large rocks are unwieldy without handles

In ancient Greek books they talk about going to the gym, so I think there's the ability to get healthier there than just doing day to day work.

Well construction workers are clearly not body builders.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

literally all the gym does is replicate things you can do outside

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Replicate or improve upon?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

just replicate and worse in some fashion as it doesnt train the metabolism or stimulate the nerve system as full body activity its really just a way for people in cities and regimented work schedules to do activity as there is no other way the real deal is better just nobody has time for it.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Nah I dont buy that. Thy gym gets you stronger and fitter in a safer environment than anything outside can do.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

One heavy deadlift will do that more than any yard work can. Training progressive overload resistance training really doesn't have a parallel to any job that wouldn't immediately cripple you.

Give me some examples please

Just look at how people who go to the look compared to people who go outside. The lack of sunlight is already much more healthy.

in a way im glad im handicapped in my legs, made me very strong. and its a workout just to walk for me.

Once heard an older person say "life is crazy we used to work hard in our job that there was no need for added fitness now you work and then use that money for fitness crazy"

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Working out deliberately also has the advantage that it can be ergonomic. Anytime I do an adventure activity like whitewater rafting to get too ambitious with a garden project, I tell my trainer so I can do some PT. Helps a lot.

Life is not sedentary, people are. Gyms are a collection of weights to build the body in specific ways. Life is physically challenging enough for most normies who are a click away from being a Wall-E floater

Gyms use a ton of energy to run. Which is crazy because people constantly put in "work"for their workout. All treadmills should be battery charging hamster wheels. A squat on a machine should use your energy to power the building. How is this not common practice by now?
