In general people are so uninspired, amirite?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Perhaps they just don't want to share their passion with you, for whatever reason. Unless I think someone shares my passions, I just keep quiet about them.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Yeah, I feel that. I keep my passions closely guarded most the time. Also, if someone just came up and asked me what my passions were, like what?! That's a bit personal right off the bat.
by Anonymous1 year ago
If someone just came up to me and asked what my passion was, I'd assume they were trying to recorded me for some stupid TikTok street interview or trying to recruit me to a cult or MLM.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I ask after talking with someone for quite a while. It's not a creepy thing we laugh and I ask oh so you have a plant bio degree. What made you want that?
by Anonymous1 year ago
This seems like a very introvert answer. Why do you keep them secret?
I'll go first, I am passionate about and love to play guitar more than anything in the world
by Anonymous1 year ago
so a stereotypically cool interest... what if like Egon (character in Ghostbusters) you were passionate about collecting molds, spores and fungus? Do you have any empathy for those people? Do you think it would be as fun to share if your interests were often met with laughter or disdain?
by Anonymous1 year ago
I would love to hear about it and why you like it.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I would think nothing negative of a hobby involving collecting fungi and molds. I think people should really just go for it and put themselves out there. If someone doesn't like it, so what?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Oh you play guitar?!?!? Are you able to sweep pick 32nd notes at 225bpm? I bet you can't even 0-3-5. SMHmyhead. Do you even know that today is the day there gonna throw it back to you? I don't believe that anybody feels the way I do about you now.
by Anonymous1 year ago
No, but I am working on it! I've almost got my major scale down! Anyway here's wonderwall.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Not actively sharing something isn't necessarily the same as keeping a secret.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Ngl, that's a pretty acceptable answer by most. As a fellow guitar player, people immediately react in a positive and almost admiring manner when I mention this hobby to them. The reaction is completely different when I mention my 1/6th scale figure-collecting hobby. Idk, something between the "oh, that's cool" sympathy reaction and " ooh, like toys?" questionable reaction.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Yeah I always down play mine because I think people get weirdly competitive about them.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Ditto! I have a few niche hobbies that people gawk at when they hear
by Anonymous1 year ago
What are they? I'd love to hear
by Anonymous1 year ago
I hope that is the reason.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Everyone thinks they have to be a critic these days about everything, and so when you share your passions to someone and they start critiquing and judging and nitpicking it's a mood killer. Sometimes it's best to not share with others what you care most about
It's like no Martha, I didn't ask for your opinion
by Anonymous1 year ago
That's sad:/
by Anonymous1 year ago
No, I've noticed my hobbies and passions slowly fade away as I got older and more tired. It really depends on the person.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I've found most people don't "get" it and I get tired of wincing through the forced conversation as they try to connect your passion to something they think is the same thing but totally not at all the same thing
"Oh cool cool neat I'm into _unrelated thing_ myself"
I feel like most people that seem to want to get to know you out of nowhere are the types to not actually care, listen, and find out about you they just like talking and establishing rapport with everyone for some reason.
by Anonymous1 year ago
well yeah working 40+ hrs weekly hinders that. people are tired and don't have free time. probably why a lot of working class fathers spend their free time drinking beer and watching football.
by Anonymous1 year ago
This. I used to have dreams and ambitions as a kid. Now I just consider myself lucky to have gotten out of the service industry so I don't have to interact with the half of the populace that are dumber than average.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Having Hobbies can also get really expensive when you're on a working class budget.
You like Cars? Thats thousand of dollars right there. But don't worry a few karting races are only a couple hundred.
You wanna do some National park hikes, epic hunting or fishing trip, go surf or ski? Better save up a good chunk of cash for the trip plus time missed from work specially if you're hourly without paid vacation/pto
If you have an outdoorsy/physical hobby you better pray you don't get hurt if living in the US since healthcare is only for the well off.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I don't think people are uninspired, it's just that as you grow older and reality sets in, you have less time or perhaps even no time to pursue whatever you were originally passionate about as a kid and those passions begin to fade until they appear to no longer exist anymore.
by Anonymous1 year ago
This is a thing, I've often found myself wondering like... don't you people have hobbies?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Inspiration and motivation are 2 different things. You can be inspired by someone you admire or something in general but if you lack the motivation, then you won't be able to carry out that inspiration.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I guess that's true.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Living passionately is a choice, and it's one I am happy to make every day.
I care deeply about the things and people that hold my attention.
by Anonymous1 year ago
This is truly unpopular. Tell someone you're following your passion with an art major and they'll act like you're a murderer. If you don't exist to be a corporate producer you are seen as worthless
by Anonymous1 year ago
I feel like that is because you can follow that passion in much more productive and economical ways outside of college. College is a joke unless you want something specific and even then there is only one or two classes you can benefit from to pursue a passion.
Now for job benefits the story is different
by Anonymous1 year ago
Just curious, what's your passion?
by Anonymous1 year ago
I have hobbies but I wouldn't say I'm passionate about any of them.
What you say does resonate with me though. About a year or so ago I began to realize that the spark had left my life. I strived for nothing, felt passion for nothing, and began to actively try and search for it but found nothing.
I was passionate about things previously, but had come to be burnt out by them.
I want to be passionate about something, but figuring out what exactly that is has been the ultimate battle.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I don't know how to say this and not sound rude, but is it really any of your business whether someone is inspired or not? If someone's not interesting to you, move on with your life and focus on meeting folks who ARE interesting.
Maybe it's a product of my age…I dunno…but I think it's easier to just move on with stuff rather than dwell on how you think people should be. Personally, I don't have time to sit around pondering how people should be. If I don't find someone interesting, I just don't invest any time in them.
If people wanna love uninspiring lives, more power to them. So long as they're not harming anyone they're free to do as they please. That includes living a boring, uninspired life. 🤷♂️
by Anonymous1 year ago
I mean I think their point wasn't that it was personally offensive people are uninspired, it just makes them sad, which I think is perfectly valid. It's like being sad people get trapped in jobs they hate: it's not really your business, but you can still feel bad for them
by Anonymous1 year ago
"Want nothing" is where you're wrong. They want a living wage, they want their own home, they want affordable healthcare, they want to not worry about all these things anymore. Most people don't have the luxury of sitting around talking about passions they have zero time for in real life.
by Anonymous1 year ago
It isn't something you have to have assets for. I learned about crows and can tell you a couple cool facts about then. That took 20 minute wiki read. You can learn to do something through YouTube. Cheap options are available for so much and free education is everywhere.
by Anonymous1 year ago
People know things, they may just not share your exuberance for talking about them. (Or don't want to talk *to you* about them.)
by Anonymous1 year ago
I hope you are right :)
by Anonymous1 year ago
"I am just sad because I used to think that generally people would strive for more of what they love. Unfortunately I have met few who have found that passion."
i find that with passion it often gets pressured into some kind of of money making side hustle business

and nothing kills passion like business.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Agreed. There is so little learning for learning's sake.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think unchecked access to internet/ social media/ TV and movies has most of us too distracted to find inspiration from other sources. It's not like it's not there anymore just harder to tap into.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I just learned how to ride a street bike. It's all I want to do any talk about. I gotta find more people like minded because most people don't give a crap.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Tell me what you like about and how hard you've worked. What got you interested?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Most people do have those passions but you might not know it because not everyone's so outspoken about them. All it takes is one person's mockery and they'll hide their spark in fear forever
by Anonymous1 year ago
This hits deep. It took a long time for me not to care anymore
by Anonymous1 year ago
The problem with this is that at every single point growing up, we are told to not have a passion.
In school we are all told "You need to pass Maths, English and Science because Art wont get you a job!". When we are asked by out parents about what we want to do when we are older and someone says "I want to learn all about Greek Mythology!" we get told "That's great! But what job do you want?"
Hell when we are getting a bit older in mid-late teens and we try to make friends, knowing about Quilting or the history of the Shiny-Charizard-Ex card in pokemon will just get you called a looser or a nerd.
by Anonymous1 year ago
> at every single point growing up, we are told to not have a passion.
Who has ever told you not to have a passion??
by Anonymous1 year ago
"Be realistic!"
by Anonymous1 year ago
This may be true for adolescents and I used to this the same but the internet connects us all and there is someone or someway you can explore that passion. I promise
by Anonymous1 year ago
I'm an extremely passionate person, and my passions make me so happy. I've had a number of people tell me they are jealous of me and "wish they could love things like I do."
Not sure if it's a personality thing or something people can work on.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I've had people close to me say very harmful things because I just pick things up. I didn't consider jealousy
by Anonymous1 year ago
Maybe they just haven't found it yet?
Or didn't have the opportunity to yet?
I've only realized mine 30 years into this life. Some people find theirs even later.
People can't really force themselves to be passionate about something.
by Anonymous1 year ago
This is true. I find so many things interesting so I am constantly exploring. I just hope people find the same joy I have.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Are you my ex-girlfriend?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Maybe people just don't like you or you make them uncomfortable about sharing their passions. My mom got overly excited about things I liked and I don't share anything I'm excited about with people like that. Perhaps you give off that vibe?
by Anonymous1 year ago
I hope not. People generally seem to like me but I can't be sure.
Maybe I only link with a certain type of person? On the other hand at my work I get all types of people who choose to interact with me specifically again.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think that for a lot of people mindless scrolling and video games has consumed them to the point where they don't feel the need to develop hobbies. It's a sad reality for a lot of people and deserves to be talked about more. Another aspect of this is people are worse at communicating these days, so likely a lot of people have interests and hobbies but since we can all find outlets to talk about this stuff on the internet, some don't feel the need to talk about it with peers. Which isn't the worst thing but makes it harder to connect with people.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Doom scrolling bad
by Anonymous1 year ago
I have interests and hobbies…reading books, listening to music, going to concerts, watching movies and kdramas…but I don't really have to strive or struggle for anything when it comes to them? I don't think that's necessarily a requirement for having a hobby, but maybe I'm just not passionate enough about them idk, they're just stuff I like to do
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think my wording could have been better. I just have noticed that any effort seems to be too much.
by Anonymous1 year ago
They didn't lose their passion, it was trained out of them by the consent factory.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I have a lot of passion, I could tell you about it
by Anonymous1 year ago
Please share them!
by Anonymous1 year ago
I have noticed that too. I wonder if there is just something of a burn out in people, lives are spent navigating school and work and interpersonal relationships and it feels like existing is hard enough as it is and any free time is just spent decompressing.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I work to jobs to survive. I don't have time for hobbies
by Anonymous1 year ago
Your hobbies don't have to be complex. It could be discovering music from every genre, every country and every era. It could be reading ; you have so many options from audiobook to kindle to classic paper. I don't understand this 'I don't have time for hobbies'.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Agreed. A live to work mentality that CAN be broken out of
by Anonymous1 year ago
I work two jobs and my days off don't lineup
by Anonymous1 year ago
None at all? Nothing interests you enough to listen to a YouTube video about on your way to work? Nothing calls you to learn more about it?
by Anonymous1 year ago
I find people to be either obsessed and dysfunctional hobbyist or completely uninspired.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I'd personally say people's passions interest me less than their personality.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Some don't find it. Others had theirs sniffed out throughout their life.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think the digital age has really changed the dynamic on this. Before now, if you had a passion for building, you didn't have many options available to you, other than.. to build stuff. Now, you can download Minecraft or Timberborn (yeeah!) and build away. One kid built the universe in Minecraft, and I would say that would take passion, and not passion for video gaming, but passion for building.
With that said, I have several cousins that talk just as you've described. But, as I dig into what their daily life involves, one of them has a decently popular twitch channel that he spends a lot of time on. But when I ask him about this question, I don't get "Well, I love doing my Twitch channel". It's almost as if it's become "just something I do".
by Anonymous1 year ago
Those things are awesome. I wonder if you cousin has tried to look into his analytics and optimized his channel?
by Anonymous1 year ago
In general people under 25 act dumb
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think school does a pretty good job at making people uninspired.
by Anonymous1 year ago
School has been a huge inspiration for me. I have gotten an education past my degree when I can afford it. And when I can't I read wiki
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think that Covid killed a lot of passion in the world and in its place a lot of resentment appeared. It will take a while for society to get back to a point of celebrating art, creativity, and beauty in meaningful ways
by Anonymous1 year ago
What were some of your passions specifically?
by Anonymous1 year ago
I loved going to movies, concerts, and festivals a lot and worked in event operations before vivid. With all of the attention to large crowds from covid combined with growing fears from gun violence a lot of those things just don't feel the same now. Being in public in general has largely lost its appeal unless I have an errand to run or something. Just feels like the last 3-5 years society has went through a lot and doesn't really know how to process it
by Anonymous1 year ago
These are really valid reasons. Did you like live events to watch someone put on a huge amount of skill? Or was it the social event of having a ton of people around?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Adulthood is the fundamental decision, made daily, whether to remain interesting and passionate, or get boring and dull. The older you get, the harder it is to find the ones who are still interesting and passionate. They're out there, but you have to know where to look.
by Anonymous1 year ago
This is just fundamentally not true I have only grown more creative and adventurous as I have grown. I have witnessed this in others as well
by Anonymous1 year ago
There's nothing more boring, unoriginal, and uninspiring than people who constantly think talking to people about their 'passions' counts as a deep and scintillating conversation.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Call me overbearing or awkward that is probably fair and true.
But you can't deny when people say "I don't do anything" you don't feel a twinge of concern for their well being.
Even if someone said I like TV that can spark a great conversation about favorite shows or art styles or genera's
by Anonymous1 year ago
I think it's more likely that not everyone just immediately opens up to you about their passions and goals in life, rather than the majority of the population just living a pointless NPC life with no interests or hobbies...
OP really thinking they are the main character
by Anonymous1 year ago
Lol I hope that's the answer. I try not to be awkward about it I don't immediately go TELL ME WHAT YOU LOVE! After a bit of small talk and introduction I simply ask people what they like, ask questions about why and show genuine interest.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Most people have passions, and most of us know not to share it willy nilly with people.
by Anonymous1 year ago
Why though?
by Anonymous1 year ago
Most people probably give you just enough to make you go away.
If I meet someone and they're real aggressive about getting to know me I just hide all interesting aspects of my life, I want to them to get bored and move to the next target.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I hope you are right:) I try to gauge the conversation and leave if I suspect this is the situation. It probable I am not as good as I think I am ;)
by Anonymous1 year ago
Have you heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? In order to pursue self actualization, one needs a whole list of other needs met. A lot of people have experienced or constantly experience the trauma of not having even the most basic needs of safety, housing, or food security met.
by Anonymous1 year ago
They may not wanna share their passions with you and have you forgotten the world we live in? Money is king. That is all anyone has brain space to think about. The next check they can get. Passion is leisure at this point.
Of course some folks still make time, but majority of the earth has one big thing on the brain. Money.
by Anonymous1 year ago
That's true. I guess I work to live and some just live to work. That makes me sad and hopefully they just don't want to share with me
by Anonymous1 year ago
I'm not passionate about anything. Guess what. I don't want to hear about your passion.
by Anonymous1 year ago
I guess that's alright. It seems a sad way to live.
I won't tell you about mine if you don't want to hear I don't have a problem with that.
by Anonymous1 year ago
The ruling class does everything it can to prevent people from being passionate.
by Anonymous1 year ago
This is a sad answer. Why blame someone ambiguous group instead of looking at individual ?
