I don't know you, so I can't tell the exact issue. My guess is your style won their first impression, but there are something else made them feel that way.

I do think this is true sometimes. Like when I see a student with a bold haircut and dyed a bright color, I'll probably compliment them on the cool look even if I personally don't find it aesthetically ideal. But sometimes I genuinely really like the outlandish thing. I appreciate people pushing boundaries, even if it isn't my personal taste.
