+131 The Saw movies got better with each movie, not worse. amirite?

by Anonymous 8 months ago

The very first film was better than the rest combined IMO, so I couldn't disagree more, lol. I appreciate the actual unpopular opinion in any case.

I'm the other way. I think they are all terrible

by Anonymous 8 months ago

All those reasons you listed are exactly why it got worse. The original is a marvel. Low budget, insane results. The first movie is so tense while really not being much of anything. It made a gross feeling with very little gore considering the series' reputation. The sequels progressively got more shocking, but less fulfilling. The tension ceased to exist after a while and it basically became a better version Final Destination

I love the series and couldn't agree more. It's one of the few horror movies/series where I genuinely didn't see all the plot twists coming, and I couldn't wait to see the next game setup. It's fascinating, and Jigsaw's backstory made it even better

First two are the best. However, now I'm not so sure since I seen Saw X. It's the best since the 2nd imo.

I agree to a point. I love the first 5. 1 is obviously the best because it is standalone and started the whole thing. I think 2 is a little overrated. 3-5 are peak saw. The biggest mistake they made was killing off Stahm so early. He was a great protagonist and his cat/mouse chase with Hoffman was well done.

I like the idea of Hoffman using Strahm's literal severed hand to plant evidence on him, a dead man. Such a cool horror movie trope.

Im gonna disagree that they got better in plot i think they really burned out by the 3rd movie and just went with cheesy gotcha plot twists. They basically made Jigsaw a clairvoyant deity. Now the traps and special effects did get exponentially better you got me there they got awesome. That needle pit still makes my skin crawl.

This is unpopular opinions, not wrong ones.

The first movie was interesting, with a surprising twist. The rest were just pointless, increasingly unrealistic torture porn.

I agree, great series. Used to go see the midnight release every year (haven't seen Spiral yet though). Now here's an unpopular one though, and a question. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed Saw X. Was a great treat. What I don't understand, however... is that it's supposedly significantly good and almost unanimously well-received compared to the others, even by the critics and Rotten Tomatoes, which does say something. I mean sure its been a while and the culture shifted and it was indeed quite a good entry - but I'm having difficulty seeing what made it significantly stand out compared to, say, VI?

Massive saw fan here, very interesting take! I don't think the later saw films are bad at all, I love how the plot of the first 7 movies all interconnect with each other. It's so interesting imo

There always the same film just different traps.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

And different reasons why their trapped

by Anonymous 8 months ago

but its still the same point jigsaw is trying to make (even if its a dumb way)

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Yup and doing a horrible job of making that point

by Anonymous 8 months ago

The acting and storylines get worse

by Anonymous 8 months ago

First two were good. Rest were numbered clones just to make a buck.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I think it's unfair to say "movie critics don't understand". Yes they do. They just didn't like those movies.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

This take is sacrilege.

I'm doing a rewatch at the moment leading up to watching saw X for the first time. Watched saw 7 last night. The first one was definitely the best but I think the sequels get a bad wrap mostly. I think all the sequels are pretty much on par with each other

by Anonymous 8 months ago

they got more tame

by Anonymous 8 months ago

Idk. I've seen only the first three but the very first was much better than the other two

by Anonymous 8 months ago

No way. The only good one is the first one. Every movie that follows gets worse

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I disagree. Mostly because saw 3d, jigsaw and spiral are absomutely horrible. I could kind if understand you if it were from saw 1-6, but the three after are sooo bad. Still I think the first 2 are best, followed by 6 and 5

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I actually enjoyed the first Saw the most because it was all filmed in one room.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

I've been watching through the movies for the first time (1-4 completed so far) and imo the first movie was the best, with the following movies being equally good, but not as good as the first.

Saw is the most pretentious movie franchise I've ever watched. I watched them all just for the creative traps and gore, definitely not for the overly convoluted and lame plot. If we're talking about traps, yes, they got better. Every other aspect? They got significantly worse with each one.

by Anonymous 8 months ago

It depends on what you expect from a movie. I don't care how this sounds but when i watch a saw movie i expect a bloody mess with cool traps/kills and lots of graphical torture. That's all i need in the torture porn genre. I don't care about the story the way i do with many other genres. That's why i think saw 1 is the worst of them all except maybe spiral (again, seen as a torture porn movie, the movie all in all surely is better than the following ones)

Not 7 tho…I love 5 and 6
