+180 I hope Nintendo will focus on making their next console have more up to date hardware to keep up with Cross platform play, amirite?

Mario Wonder is proof that Nintendo is still in it for the passion. Not every game or console is a heavy hitter, but they continue to try to do something different every time. I love my Switch. I also love my other consoles for other reasons.

Like Minecraft… it's buggy on Switches even though it's just Bedrock like any device has. Even local play is buggy. They gotta fix the bugs, seriously.

yeah Nintendo should purchase Microsoft and fix Minecraft LMAO

Other way around.

The Nintendo Switch did have up to date hardware upon release but it is a very different device than Sony and Microsoft produce. It is a portable system that can be docked to a TV, not a home gaming console. If you look at the capabilities of mobile processors today, if they make a system like the Switch and release it before the end of 2024 it will likely have performance somewhere between the PS4 and PS4 Pro. If they focus on 1080p output, they likely can have some cross platform games with the PS5 and XBox Series systems but these games will likely experience graphical downgrades.

It's just another example of nintendo focusing more on gimmicks than a system that can actually play games properly. The Wii was the same thing, extremely underpowered compared to the other consoles of the time, the whole focus of the Wii was the motion controls and it was basically just a Gamecube Pro at the end of the day. I'm not hating on anyone for enjoying the Switch, I know a lot of people love it but even Nintendo's own original IPs suffer in quality because of the systems limitations, let alone third party games that can barely run on the damn thing. I'll admit I'm someone who doesn't really care for the novelty of being able to take my games on the go, if I was I would probably have a better apreaciation for the system, but as it stands it's just a woefully underpowered machine that is really only good if you really love Nintendo's first party games, and that's only because you don't have any other option to play them on.

The Switch playing on TV or portable makes it the best system.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Only if you value the portability over performance. It's a matter of preference and I prefer performance.

The game being fun and playable is what matters most.

Sorry but 4GB RAM is downright pathetic and it makes the games suffer in quality and complexity as artists cannot fulfill the full scope of their vision. So many Nintendo games are just stunted. Look at all the pokemon games on switch compared to the early footage. There are a few titles that are almost always solid tho like mario and zelda, but these games could be even better with more RAM and a better GPU. I want a mario game with voxel destruction personally

For me it's all about the games, I'd rather have a Super Nintendo with every game than a PS5 with every game because that is just more fun for me.

Having stable framerates is part of playability.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

That has not been an issue for me

If you value performance over portability, aren't there a minimum of 3 other platforms you have as options? If you want PlayStation or Xbox, just buy one of those instead. If you want performance and price doesn't matter, get a PC. I never got the "asking for more of the same" take. Why ask for more of what everyone else is doing when you already have what everyone else is doing as an option?

You'd be right if Nintendo exclusives weren't such a huge selling point. Plenty of people would prefer stable 60fps on games like TOTK over portability.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

There's an option for that though. If you want ToTK to run at 60fps (and at higher resolution) you can emulate it. It doesn't take long to set up, and as much as Nintendo hates it, it's legal.

> It's just another example of nintendo focusing more on gimmicks than a system that can actually play games properly. The Switch isn't a gimmick, it is the successor to the 3DS. After the Wii U failed, Nintendo exited the home console market and focused on their portable system. They likely realized that one of the most popular features from previous systems, playing portable games on the tv using a controller, could minimize the impact of this decision if done right. The switch is like combining a GBA with a Gameboy player and making its use seamless.

Microsoft wanting\* to port to Nintendo is kinda of misconception of their initial intent. It was part of their stunt to appeal to the court that their Acitivision purchase wouldn't lead to monopoly excluding competitors. Would I want more snappier high spec sure, but their demographics wouldn't buy switch to play Microsoft's liveservice games Cod or OW. They mostly buy switch with sole intent of playing their first party titles. It's why Xbox vs Sony not Xbox vs Nintendo.

My guess is you see ports of PS4 era Call of Duty games to the next Nintendo system. They might be enhanced versions or compilations, but it will mostly be a relatively inexpensive way to show to everyone they're "playing nicely."

The problem with this is that focusing on matching the power of XBox and PS consoles will require Nintendo to compromise in other areas. Those tend to be areas that Nintendo fans prioritize over power and would likely reduce sales of the console. 1) Portability. I can't tell you the number of polls I've seen in which people say their main reason for playing X game on the Switch is due to the portability. This is very important to many Nintendo customers, and I would be very surprised if Nintendo was willing to give that up in order to compete with other consoles power. 2) Cost. The Switch is priced low enough that some households have more than one. I've known of some households that have as many as 4, one for each household member. On the other hand, how many households to you know that have more than 1 Series S/X or PS5?

They've diminishing returns with every attempt to be the biggest and baddest console starting with the SNES. On the other hand all their biggest successes over the past 25 years have focused on streamlined, accessible experiences with cost and portability as a factor.
