+152 Brian May is more talented than Freddie Mercury. amirite?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You can't compare the 2 since they were doing vastly different things. But an argument for Mercury is the band didn't take off until he joined it.

As a guitar player Freddie absolutely makes the band. Brian is solid and a great songwriter, but without the showmanship and voice of Freddy I don't think Queen would have nearly the legacy they do

To be fair, Brian may is more talented than most people between building his own guitar at a young age, crafting the music, and being a recognized expert in astrophysics. But he still can't sing as good as Freddy could or entertain as well as Freddy did.

Definitely agree on the last. Freddie was an incredible frontman. I agree he can't sing as well either, but he DOES sing extremely well.

I think his voice is weak, he'd clearly not have been a rock singer alone. Him and Roger only really sang songs as Queen (and a lot of bands at the time) just did so as a collective, rather like how Ringo did his token song an album. He was a good songwriter, sure (they all were in places), very distinct guitar sound (helps if you build it from a fireplace and get a unique sound from an amp found in a skip). *More* talented - not sure. But the two are the absolute key to Queen.

May is a true virtuoso. His solos can be perfection.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Right? Absolutely incredible.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Brian may would have been the undisputed number one in almost every band of his days. But he just had to be in a band with Freddie

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Talented? Yes. More talented than Freddie Mercury? No.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I disagree.

Brian May was a great rhythm guitarist with excellent phrasing and melodies but wasn't innovative or ground breaking like Beck, Clapton, Hendrix or Page Freddie was original, unique and compelling - there was nobody like him before and so many imitators after but he stands out alone

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I prefer May to all four of those, easily. And saying May wasn't innovative is just flat out wrong.

May>Hendrix? AAAAAAALLLLLRIGHTYTHEN……..

by Anonymous 1 year ago

OP must be thinking of Chad Hendrix or something.

Timmy Djentrix

No, I'm just not a huge fan of Hendrix. Super talented and I respect him but not my favorite.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Even Brian May would say Jimi is the better guitarist.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

And I would disagree with May, and that's ok. Opinions happen.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Your opinion of May > May's opinion of himself … 🙄

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Never said it was better. Just said it's ok to have a differing opinion.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I admire your commitment to your position

Easily.

![gif](giphy|NQywixima1mrEyRC1X|downsized) I've seen some interesting takes but this one is just wild. I don't know why everyone is always so goddamn obsessed with comparing artists. Just listen to them all, lads.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Kinda just human nature. We all have favorites.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Just putting this out there- you seem yiu might appreciate Andy Summers Police guitar work. Not flashy, super creative and cool, gets overshadowed by disgustingly charismatic lead singer.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

And how was May innovative?

by Anonymous 1 year ago

He did tons and tons of work messing with sounds. He created Night at the Opera without any sort of digital effects, and frankly was able to do some incredible stuff with his guitar he made himself, and there was a lot unique to him.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Unpopular. And also quite wrong, especially on his voice range. Talking about his voice when you compare him to Freddie is like me talking about my speed when I compare myself to Ussain Bolt. He has written some good songs but those you listed are far from his best, let alone Queen's best. Lastly, his talent can be evidenced by his outburst of creativity in the last 3 decades.

No

Yes.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Never heard of him

by Anonymous 1 year ago

But I guarantee you've heard him.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

I absolutely agree

by Anonymous 1 year ago

You can say that but QUEEN isn't QUEEN without Mercury. Yeah they're still going but they're just Queen not QUEEN.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

Wouldn't be QUEEN without May either. Or Deacon, or Taylor.

by Anonymous 1 year ago

They're just Queen, Mercury made it QUEEN.
